It is bit more nuanced than that tbh, he doesn't think he would be the right candidate *at this time*.
(especially since, heretical thought this but bear with me, Labour might actually want to give themselves the best chance of winning)

Worthing Community Independents formed by Margaret Howard (Broadwater ward), Carl Walker (Selden ward) and Hilary Schan (Tarring ward), all of whom were elected as Labour. Hilary Schan was Momentum Co-Chair. Mm, yes. I seem to recall certain people scoffing when I said that I'd heard there was some factionalism in Worthing labour Tbf there might be a bit less now

Which two? Defections to the Liberal Democrats ( Caroline Nokes perhaps?) seem more likely in my opinion. As said before, she is very likely in the "if they were ever going to defect they would have done it some time ago" category.

Groundhog day here for Labour irrespective of how badly the Tories do, isn't it?

Is the sole remaining Tory councillor the same person that held a byelection in that ward by just 3 votes in late 2022?

A shock that in Paston and Walton ward, Nick Sandford, mayor and the longest serving LD councillor after 23 years, lost to a CON - by 5 votes. Fletton & Woodston - LAB gain from CON - the losing CON is Andy Coles ( brother of Richard, and a former 'spy cop'), the LAB winner Daisy Creedon-Blakemore is 18 Different politics to his sibling, then. The new Labour councillor who beat him is apparently the youngest in the country.

Paul Richards - who once wrote a book about how to win elections - still hasn't actually won one himself, then.

And the point made just above is that it was very close to happening - small further swings would have reduced the number of Tory MEPs to one third of their actual number, at which point some sort of challenge to Major's leadership would have been distinctly possible. The parallels with this week's PCC elections are pretty obvious.

In the past some ethnic minority Labour candidates did probably do worse due to old prejudices when you look at the figures. These days I believe the consensus is that this has largely disappeared And if it hadn't, you would advocate pandering to these prejudices? Pretty sure that actually happened in the past, "advocate" or not.

Though if you have all the other boroughs figures, they shouldn't be that hard to work out?

He quite possibly has parliamentary ambitions, but may be also waiting to see what happens to the Tories post-election before committing himself.

I suppose major electorate changes between boroughs might require a rejigging, though not much sign of that recently I think.

Sakina Sheikh (Labour) has lost her seat. By only a small margin, it turns out - commiserations.

Which is the first saved deposit for the LibDems since 2008 in the actual mayoral election I think?

I expect it'd be healthier for the Labour Party in the long run if they refuse to stoop to ethnic pandering, even if it would be to their electoral benefit in some individual seats. Picking a minority candidate for a significantly minority seat does not, in itself, amount to "ethnic pandering".
