According to tomorrow's Daily Telegraph, there are eight Conservative MPs considering defecting to the UK Independence Party: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9703678/Exclusive-Eight-Tory-MPs-in-talks-about-defecting-to-Ukip.htmlGiven that their source is Stuart Wheeler, who might be said to be parti pris, I'm not giving it very much credence at the moment. And it might be a very easy way of relieving tension for Conservative MPs feeling under pressure to go to a UKIP person and launch a conversation on the subject of "I'm annoyed with the Tories and thinking of defecting". |

Ah Jacko, an old sparring partner of mine when I used to post on PB.Com. Utterly clueless about most things in my experience so suspect many Tories wouldn't exactly be upset to see him leave. Above and beyond that though, his quote above is breathtakingly stupid. How can his party hierarchy trust him with anything now if he might jump ship at any moment? I imagine many internal party briefings might be very hard to come by for him from now on. |

O/T: Slightly poor journalism in that report. It gives the impression Robert Spink was defeated in Castle Point as a UKIP candidate when he was of course an Independent: "The last serving Conservative MP to switch sides was Bob Spink, MP for Castle Point in Essex, who resigned the Conservative whip in March 2008 and who defected to Ukip in the following month. He lost the seat in the 2010 election to Tory candidate Rebecca Harris." |

It has long been evident that being utterly clueless is no bar to advancing in politics. I suspect we could all name MP's whose careers seem to comply with the rule: survival of the dimmest. I think Stewart Jackson's comments have damaged the party and damaged his prospects in the party, they are not neccessarily the comments of a genius.

Yes, they haven't been best served by their last couple of MPs have they??
I also recall Jackson from the days I used to lurk regularly at pb.com. Even by the standards of that site, he came across as a clueless, graceless blowhard. The contrast with the (now sadly ex) Labour MP for Broxtowe who also regularly posted on there was all too evident.

As with the SDP in 1983, any MP thinking of joining UKIP will know they would be risking the end of their political career - as well as letting in the two Eds.

I have reason to believe this is now the most credible defection rumour to date and that it is likely to happen before Christmas. I think it will be 4 or 5 though. And sadly yes they are all Tory  |

Does UKIP still have policy that any MP can be recalled, to be manually implemented that if so many constituents sign a petition the MP will put themselves up for a by-election?

Interesting to note that both Frank Field and Kate Hoey started their political lives being known as raving leftwingers. Field had made his name by running the Child Poverty Action Group which attacked the Wilson and Callaghan governments for not spending enough on benefits. He did not just look left-wing in comparison to his predecessor Simon Mahon; he joined the Tribune Group and aligned with the left after being elected an MP.
Kate Hoey had been involved with some far left groups in Northern Ireland in her early years and was the most left-wing of the candidates in the selection for Dulwich in 1981. She was included on the Alliance list of '101 Damnations' issued in the 1987 election.
