I make it seven gains in the end with Launton & Otmoor moving the Lib Dems from third to largest party on the council. Yes. LD 17 Lab 13 Con 11 green 4 Ind 3. The Lib Dems, Greens and 1 Independent formed a joint group and would now have 22 councillors. A tricky balance. This third: LD 8 (+7), Lab 4 (+1), Con 2 (-9), Grn 1 (+1) Liberal Democrat gain over Conservative in: Adderbury, Bloxham and Bodicote (by 192 votes) Bicester East (by 169 votes) Bicester North and Caversfield (by 96 votes) Bicester South and Ambrosden (by 603 votes) Cropredy, Sibford and Wroxton (by 254 votes) Fringford and Heyfords (by 220 votes) Launton and Otmoor (by 100 votes) Labour gain over Conservative in: Banbury Hardwick (by 309 votes) Green gain over Conservative in: Kindlington E (by 469 votes) Close holds: Banbury Calthorpe and Easington (by 21 votes over Lab)

Such replacements on the list happened seven times already: 2000: Jennette Arnold (Labour) became a list member to replace David Lammy, who won a by-election and became an MP. 2002: Michael Tuffley (LD) became a list member to replace Louise Bloom, who resigned for family reasons (she later appeared as a councillor in Eastleigh and currently in South Gloucestershire under the married name of Louise Harris). 2003: Diana Johnson (Labour) became a list member to replace Trevor Phillips, who was appointed head of the Commission for Racial Equality (now the "Equality and Human Rights" Commission) 2003: Noel Lynch (Green) became a list member to replace Victor Anderson, for reasons unclear, but he returned to his previous work for a Plaid Cymru MP (and is now Labour, working for Lloyd Russell-Moyle) 2005: Geoff Pope (LD) became a list member to replace Lynne Featherstone, elected as an MP (she lost in 2015, is now a Lord) 2015: Kemi Badenoch (Con) became a list member to replace Victoria Borwick, elected as an MP (she lost in 2017) 2017: Susan Hall (Con) became a list member to replace Kemi Badenock, elected as an MP. Also in 2020 Fiona Twycross (Lab) resigned and she was replaced by Murad Qureshi (Lab). Yes, she apparently resigned because she was unwilling to serve an additionnal year after her term was extended by a year due to COVID.

Incidentally, what happens when an Assembly member resigns or dies? Is there a by-election or are they replaced by the next person on the party list? For a list member vacancy it's the latter option - that's how Susan Hall became an Assembly Member, she was next on the list when Kemi Badenoch became an MP. For a constituency member it's a by-election though that has never actually happened.

I’ve just realised that this might be the first time (that I can recall) when all the May local elections have taken place without any being deferred because of a candidate’s death. Has anyone spotted one that I haven’t noticed ? There is one in Coventry.

A recount implies that the votes have been counted wrong. Either some have been lost (or "found"!) or some bundles are on the wrong pile, or the bundles have been stuffed. Each borough issues their own ballot papers and counts their own votes. If there's no suggestion that the other boroughs have counted wrong, they won't do recounts. I'd have thought it would have to be very close if a few lost bundles in Coventry swung it, but if the tallies don't add up, the candidates can ask for a recount. But the basis of a recount is that the vote is close. If none of the districts were remotely close but the overal vote was just 1 vote apart, what would be the basis for any recount? The base for a recount can also be discrepancies in the result of a subunit, which lead to think there might be errors in the count there.

Fairly quiet here - the only seat changing hands was a Green gain from the LDs in Newnham. The Tories fell back from last year's highs, but are still someway above what they achieved in 2022. Third: Lab 9, LD 3 (-1), Grn 2 (+1) Council: Lab 26, LD 9 (-1), Grn 5 (+1), Con 1, Ind 1 democracy.cambridge.gov.uk/mgElectionResults.aspx?ID=37&V=0&RPID=86892209according to council, in %: Lab 41%, LD 22%, Grn 21%, Con 14%

As said by me in another thread, how long do most Muslim voters stay angry with Labour once Gaza is over? They generally came back from defecting over Iraq, after all. As the West refuses to stop selling weapons to Israel, I'm not sure it will ever be really over, alas.

Where I live Starmer’s apparent resistance to bullying from the Muslim/ left over Gaza has gained him a fair amount of respect. I hope his position isn’t just a political calculation, but if it is I suspect it to be a shrewd one. Something the BBC news reporters commenting on Oldham etc. don’t seem to have considered. From what I’ve seen the main thrust of Labour’s whole campaign so far is to hold on to disillusioned Conservative voters, or at least keep them from getting scared by the prospect of a Labour Government. The disillusioned Conservative voters will go back to the Conservatives once they get their nonsense together. They won't be any use to stay in power.

Women Equality Party gain over Con in: Hatch Warren and Beggarwood (by 962 votes) It’s beggars belief that so many men voted for a feminist party. Unlike the "Party of Women", the WEP is not anti-men.
