The Tory and the Green both stood in Fairfield in May, the Lib Dem in Old Coulsdon and the Labour candidate in New Addington South. Mark Samuel was part of Putting Croydon First and has stood in various elections at local and parliamentary level.

Both stood unsuccessfully in Uibhist A Deas, Èirisgeigh Agus Beinn Na Faoghla in May, (MacMillan for Alba) as both live on South Uist which is that ward and not this. Gerard MacDonald appears to be a new candidate, but lives on Barra in this ward.

Donald MacLeod stood unsuccessfully in An Taobh Siar Agus Nis, where he lives, in May. The other candidates are new – Brown, the SNP and Lib Dem candidates give Uig addresses, the Green a Carloway one (all in this ward). I think Jamie Dobson becomes the first Lib Dem candidate in the Western Isles (at local level) since 2007.

It consists primarily of the not very attractive overgrown village of Haddenham, and a few typical small Buckinghamshire villages that all look to Thame, in this corner of the county. It’s not the sort of place I’d expect to see Green victories, but as we know Green victories are increasingly random, rather than based on any identifiable base of support.

The remnant mentioned in the article and shown on OS maps as "Bernwood Forest" is right at the western end of the ward and is in fact mostly in Grendon Underwood ward. The OS map also reveals the Bernwood Jubilee Way, a 61 mile footpath. That page states that Brill, also in Grendon Underwood ward, was the administrative centre of Bernwood. I doubt I'm convincing you that this is a good ward name.

I believe that the Green victor here, who lives in Haddenham, had built up a local profile over several years and had been elected as a parish councillor, hence presumably the difference in Green votes. I've never been to this area and know nothing of our candidate this time, so will be interested to see if our previous win here was just down to the work of one person, or whether we are building a base here.

With over 1,000 LD and Lab votes to squeeze, it would be frankly astonishing if you don't pick up the seat in current circs.

That article could do with re-writing by someone familiar with the history of the place (VCH references would be a start) - conflation of Forest status with woodland is a big no-no, even if Forests in that part of England tended to be more woodland than not.

With over 1,000 LD and Lab votes to squeeze, it would be frankly astonishing if you don't pick up the seat in current circs.

Lib Dems have been fighting an energetic campaign so I am not sure it will be as simple as that.  However I note that the Green track record in by-elections in wards on the HS2 line has been phenomenal.  This is one ward away but might well be a factor.
