Houchen's not having a good run-up to polling day... Surely that's a Labour plot to ruin his life, as every other negative event happening to him.

Despite than the fact it appears he is not very good with money and might need the salary, I think the pressure on him to resign from parliament will grow. His position is untenable, simply unfit to serve. Lots of people don’t necessarily like their MPs personally or professionally but they at least have the right to be represented by someone who conducts themselves within the boundaries of what most people would consider ‘appropriate’. This joker along with William Wragg, shouldn’t be given the right to collect their wages and stand down at some (as yet) unspecified time. How can any constituent approach them with an issue that they would want assistance with? Assistance for finding hook-ups?

I was under the impression that Jonathan Edwards’s suspension came to an end, but that he has declined to retake the whip. It's not entirely clear to me exactly what happened, but it seems that the Plaid disciplinary committee allowed him back, but the party establishment didn't want him and made that clear, and he then left the party and threatened to stand as an Independent. I'd be surprised if he rejoined at this point, and Plaid have selected a new candidate for the new Caerfyrddin constituency. I think the parlimentary party refused to give him back the whip, even if he was back in the party.

Martin Shipton has a massive chip on his shoulder and Nation.Cymru despite being in receipt of public cash is a mouth piece for pro-independence so don’t be shocked when they run pieces like this. The Welsh media really is an utter shower. 😏 We have and must protect freedom of the press, even if we don’t like the bias of particular journalists or publications. But I’m shocked that a ‘news outlet’ in receipt of public money should be so willing to publish such a partisan story just before a local by-election. That's quite rich coming from a Conservative supporter.

/photo/1 I do wish the Lib Dems didn't do this. I'm not one, but I'm not reflexively hostile either, but you can't claim to be the clean politics people when you try to mislead the voters about basic stuff as part of standard operating procedure. The 'Labour can't win here' tag actually crosses the line into a lie unless you engage in some tortuous reasoning that the context somehow isn't the election in Croydon & Sutton Assembly constituency. It would be like Labour putting out a leaflet in South West with a bar chart of Hounslow and saying the Lib Dems were out of the race because of that. Is it even legal for her to put her Sutton councillor email address as the email to contact her campaign?

The truly deluded self-belief of candidates based on "people from across the movement" calling for them to stand is alarming. Well, maybe it wouldn't happen if those people were defeated in a selection and people could see it, rather than the NEC imposing its views.

The 1997 shortlist for Pontecraft and Castleford was Cat Ashton Hilary Benn Yvette Cooper John Harman Derek Scott I *think* the shortlist was drawn up by the NEC but members then had a vote out of those 5. This was noted by the late great Byron Criddle on behalf of Butler & Kavanagh in their 1997 British general election study-there were many seats like this where local applicants were not even shortlisted because of increasing NEC control. John Harman was local, through?

Liz Truss comparing herself to Brian Clough is utterly absurd, for the simple reason that prior to his 44-day stint at Leeds, Clough had already been incredibly successful by winning the League title at Derby County. What had Truss achieved of a similar magnitude prior to her 44-day stint in No. 10?? I can’t imagine what the staunch left-winger, Brian Clough, would have said if he was compared to a right-wing Pop-Con nut job. I can, but I don't think the moderators would like it being in writing it here.

I feel the most effective way to decapitate Truss doesn't pass through Labour or Bagge but a principled future Conservative leader telling her she needs to choose between CPAC and Steve Bannon or the Conservative whip.

Seems he was deselected due to a failure to declare he was one of the founder of the Christian People Alliance. He claims he was deselected due to being an active Christian.

SOPN: www.bury.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/elections-and-voting/statement-of-persons-nominatedLabour - 17 Conservative - 16 (missing Unsworth) Bury Independents - 9 (Besses, Bury East, Bury West, Elton, Moorside, Pilkington Park, Redvales, Tottington, Unsworth) Lib Dem - 4 (Bury East, Holyrood, Ramsbottom, Sedgley) Green - 4 (Holyrood, North Manor, Redvales, St Mary's) Workers Party - 3 (Bury East, Redvales, Unsworth) Radcliffe First - 3 (Radcliffe East, Radcliffe North & Ainsworth, Radcliffe West) English Democrats - 2 (Besses, Holyrood) Reform UK - 2 (Bury East, Pilkington Park) Independent - 2 (North Manor, Pilkington Park) Shocker for the Lib Dems. We were building back up some strength in Holyrood and St Mary's a couple of years back, but the all-ups came in a bad year for us, and seems to have led to a total collapse. There is 17 Conservatives, they did not miss Unsworth.

29 Independents. Is this a spillover from Rochdale or something completely different? Maybe some of it, but there was a ton of "localist" (and white) independent candidates last year too.

I make the totals: Lab 52 (-6) 51 (-7), Con 47 (-11), LD 19 (-17), Green 5 (-4), Reform UK 5 (+5), Ind 10 (-3) Surely not a coincidence that the five wards Labour are short in are exactly the four wards LD have councillors in, plus the one where they're second? Though I suppose that's what you'd expect if you were running low on paper candidates, so probably not that surprising once you've accepted the general shortage of candidates across the board. Lab: missing 1/2 in Grappenhall, Lymm S, Stockton Heath, 2/3 in Appleton, Lymm N and Thelwall Con: missing 1/2 in Burtonwood and Winwick, Poulton S, Westbrook, 2/3 in Fairfield and Howley, Orford, Poplars and Hulme, Poulton N LD: 3/3 in Appleton, Lymm N and Thelwall, 2/2 in Grappenhall, Lymm S, Stockton Heath, 2/3 in Great Sankey S, 1/2 in Latchford E, Latchford W, 1/3 in Bewsey and Whitecross, Chapelford and Old Hall, Penketh and Cuerdley Grn: 1/2 in Burtonwood and Winwick, Grappenhall, 1/3 in Chapelford and Old Hall, Great Sankey N and Whittle Hall, Rixton and Woolston Ref: 1/3 in Birchwood, Fairfield and Howley, Orford, Poplars and Hulme, Rixton and Woolston Ind: 5/3 in Penketh and Cuerdley, 2/2 in Burtonwood and Winwick, 1/3 in Great Sankey N and Whittle Hall, Orford, Rixton and Woolston

The idea that abortion law should be left at the state level is the best that the USA has come up with since Roe v Wade, which has proved catastrophic and divisive to the USA. Trump is assuredly simultaneously clumsy and unprincipled but this is not him any where near his worst It is, because it gives credence to "originalism", which is just Conservatives inventing jurisprudence.
