Final recommendations were published last. The notable changes from the current wards:
Longbenton lost West Moor, while gaining most of Benton outside the ward. Benton is renamed Forest Hall, taking in a bit more of the latter while losing most (but not all) of the former. A new Backworth and Holystone ward is created. It’s pretty awful, but the best they could do. There’s the bit of Forest Hall leftover, that village next to Shiremoor that was too big to stay in the same ward, and a massive field that electorate projections suggest will soon be no more. The shambolic Riverside ward is no more, and the replacements look… very sensible? The Tories will be very happy with the new Preston’s ward, and I’m low key excited to see what on earth happens in the Murton ward (massive new housing development incoming, crap Labour performance in recent times). The Greens look buggered, with half of Whitley Bay ward going into Cullercoats (a Labour-Tory marginal) and the other half forming Whitley Bay Central North where the Labour machine has turned a Tory fortress into Labour heartland in a few years.

That seems like a terrible Conservative showing. Is it a coincidence that four of the wards with no Tory have Reform candidates?

Missing a candidate is a ward they currently have a councillor in, no candidates in a ward that mostly had a Conservative councillor until 2021, a number of wards that they should be targeting the next time there’s a good year with undernominations.

That seems like a terrible Conservative showing. Given this is a party that held the mayoralty until 2013, and which has a number of councillors and winnable wards, this is one of if not the worst nomination performance of either major party in the entire country. It’s not even like this is some moribund and completely inept local party, the Conservative vote has been surprisingly resilient here the past few years where it matters.

That seems like a terrible Conservative showing. Is this symptomatic of the meltdown of the Conservative Party grass roots?

Long time local here. I think in the case of North Tyneside Conservatives - it's less the national picture, and more the fallout from some quite serious infighting over the last few years, which has seen a number of long term members and councillors leave the party. Hard to precisely pinpoint where it begin - but I think these events help illustrate it: Firstly you had the current leader of the party suspended by then party leader George Westwater for comments he made about a Labour councillor: - www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/tory-councillor-suspended-over-gutter-24258185After the whip was restored (without any action taken), Coun Westwater quickly found himself deselected from his own ward (St Marys): www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/leader-north-tyneside-tories-deselected-25314476Only for the new candidate, Westwater's predecessor as party leader, to quit the party altogether a month later (under a bit of a cloud): www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/tyneside-tory-chairman-sensationally-resigns-25580524 Days after the Tories selected a second new candidate, all three St Mary's Tory incumbents (including Westwater) quit the party citing toxic behaviour and bullying: www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/three-north-tyneside-councillors-resign-26140041 This included some very long term local Tory stalwarts - including Judith Wallace (mother of journalist and ex ConservativeHome Editor, Mark) - another former leader. This was the tipping point I'd say as other former local members began speaking out about bullying in the party on social media. Westwater stood as an Independent in St Mary's last year - but finished behind the Tories and Labour. The Tories polled one of their lowest ever totals in St Marys ward however. Their vote is still very sticky, but for years this was comfortably one of their safest wards in the entire North East (Wallace has polled over 80% in the past, on a 50%+ turnout). Now Westwater has joined Labour and will stand for them in St Mary's pitting him against the Tories and the remaining ex Tory Independents. Funnily enough, the Tories have alleged that Westwater tried to rejoin the party shortly before he joined Labour! This year, the Tories' core focus will be on campaigning in: St Mary's, Tynemouth, Preston with Preston Grange and New York and Murton - wards where they have the greatest strength (all have at least 1 incumbent). Because of that, I think they have a decent chance of ending up with all 12 seats - which ironically would be their best performance on the council in a decade!

Labour seem to have given up on New York & Murton by not putting any local candidates up, which is a shame as it’s definitely winnable without Preston Grange. I agree that the new Preston, St Mary’s and Tynemouth wards are all likely to be Tory sweeps, though I do think Labour has some chance in the latter two in this environment.

On paper it should be a nailed on Labour ward on the new boundaries. Even with the Tory incumbency, they should be making a substantial effort to win all 3 seats given the ward will have voted Labour at the last general election nevermind the next one.

It is probably more accurate to look at the North Tyneside Conservatives as localist Lib Dems with the support of Conservative partisans who don't care what Bones and co. have done, only for the party label: there is a superficial 'realignment' (hence why we have been told that Demographics say the Meadow Well should vote Conservative) that can actually be explained by (a) that and (b) the fact the Whitley Bay lot campaign independently from the CLP. The Westwater selection was not one done internally.

Some thoughts on where the battlegrounds are after the boundary changes.
The west should be a clean sweep for Labour. Weetslade was marginal to the Tories/Lib Dems a couple of years ago but is safe again now. Backworth and Holystone could have been trending against Labour and producing a NIMBY backlash, but there’s no real evidence of this actually happening. No Lib Dem candidates in Wallsend means there is no comeback on the cards (in fact, their last councillor is standing for Labour in Backworth).
The east, as usual, is more interesting. New York and Murton is a Labour banker, except for the fact it almost certainly voted Conservative last year. I would say it surely couldn’t be a Conservative sweep, but then I also wouldn’t have predicted the Tories winning by over 20% in the predecessor ward last year. Preston is now notionally Conservative and they benefit from a Labour councillor standing as an independent. I imagine Tynemouth is also now notionally Conservative, as while it gains likely Labour voting areas it loses very Labour voting North Shields.
Cullercoats on the other hand is clearly notionally Labour, and the fact the Tories only have 2 candidates in a ward they have a councillor in is revealing. I suspect the Greens may challenge for 2nd. Whitley Bay and Monkseaton wards will both go Labour, and in the former it’s more a question of how close the Greens come given they have been screwed over by the boundaries (initially at least). Monkseaton has only 1 Conservative candidate despite them notionally winning it in 2018!
St Mary’s is a mess, with the Tories, Labour and independents all fighting in the formerly sole safe Conservative ward. 2 of the independents are incumbent Tories running a joint slate, while the former Tory leader turned independent is standing for Labour (who are modestly helped by boundary changes). On paper I would expect a 1/1/1 split, or more accurately 3 Conservatives standing under various descriptions 😁

Labour has revoked its support for Raz Razaq in Preston & Preston Grange because of alleged anti-semitic social media posts.
