All mindless inane wind and piss from the Conservatives. If they really cared they would be advocating for more realistic funding for local government from central government.

If you cut the number of councillors, each individual councillor has more work to do, eventually leading to the individual costs going up, and the overall costs broadly the same.

Or, just an idea, how about THEY ALL STOP DOING SO MUCH FUCKING WORK. Let's have less government, not more, at every level. Less, less, less. Let's have fewer elected representatives, fewer unelected staff, and generally less of everything.

The Lib Dem in Golcar is Nicola Turner, the former Colne Valley councillor who nearly won the constituency in 2010.

Any idea who's standing in Cleckheaton and Newsome? the PDFs don't seem to be loading up with anything other than a blank page and there should still be elections on...

The Lib Dem in Golcar is Nicola Turner, the former Colne Valley councillor who nearly won the constituency in 2010. Well, 4,837 votes short. And has subsequently lost her former council ward of the same name. So I wouldn’t put too much stay in that.

Her and one other Lib Dem Cllr survived contests with the Tories during the coalition. Only to then lose in 2016 & 2018 due to the work of Rob & Thelma Walker (what different times). Labour has won every contest in the ward since bar a by election on 2019 GE day to the Tories. Nicola attempted a comeback in 2021 but came 3rd. Its one of those wards where the Labour vote appears to have come out of nowhere. But in practice much of it was always there but just split heavily for the Liberals locally/ Labour nationally. As the area continues to gentrify I think we may well hold it even in years when we do quite badly.
