The Labour candidate in Midlothian worked for Labour for years and was Ed Millibands press manager, which means he's managed to bring a fair number of M(S)Ps down into the area. Would you actually count that as an advantage? It certainly looks like it helped bring in lots of outside help. From what I've heard (know some Greens there and lived down the road) Midlothian Labour has been filled with dinosaurs and the worst of them councillors. It's positive to see more capable people getting involved.. I think he was in charge 2010-2012, so I guess that puts him ahead Ed's current media team!

A thread on unique wins from one party to another could be fun. Can I be the first to get in the technical Conservative gain from the DUP in Basingstoke last time? Could I stretch a point even further and say that Belfast East was a Lib Dem gain from the DUP in 2010? Battersea North was a Communist gain from Coalition Liberal in 1922, a Liberal gain from Communist in 1923 and a Communist gain from Liberal in 1924. Basingstoke says No!

I see??? Along the lines of 'Christ stopped at Beverley' and 'Joshua was the son of Nunthorpe' kind-of-thing'? Not sure the folk of Nunthorpe will appreciate being told they are from the East Riding! Quibbler!! Try coming up with something better quicker and in Yorkshire! Nunthorpe is well to the East. That was my point. Riding is just your thrid to that thread.

Labour hold Midlothian East. Trying to piece it together but looks a bit like this: Party | First | Transfers | Stage 2 | Transfers | Stage 3 | Transfers | Stage 4 | Lab | 1,294 | +16 | 1,310 | +33 | 1,343 | +100 | 1,443 | +239 | 1,682 | SNP | 1,260 | +10 | 1,270 | +87 | 1,357 | +27 | 1,384 | +229 | 1,613 | Ind | 780 | +9 | 789 | +42 | 831 | +83 | 914 | -914 | - | C | 331 | +11 | 342 | +17 | 359 | -359 | - | | | SGP | 197 | ? | ? | -? | - | | | | | L Dem | 68 | -68 | - | | | | | | |
I don't know the precise details of the AV rules set out in the legislation, but the use of the "?" to indicate unknown transfers to the Green Party may indicate that it is a version which prevents the SGP from receiving transferred votes on the grounds that the SGP and Lib Dem candidates combined had fewer votes than the next lowest candidate, and therefore there would not be any point in transferring votes from Lib Dem to SGP because the SGP is already bound to lose. The "proper" version of AV as recommended by the Electoral Reform Society would have had Green and Lib Dem both eliminated together after the first round. There are of course lots of versions of AV just as there are lots of versions of STV. P.S. Having said that, the Conservative candidate should also be ineligible to receive transfers under the same rule...

Didn't Andrew Hunter lose Basingstoke in 2005, not 2010? Is there something I don't know about Naomi Long? According to Wiki, despite the close relationship between the Alliance Party and the Liberal Democrats, Long does not sit with the government nor take the coalition whip and Long is not a member of the Liberal Democrats.

Robert - yes. When it gets that late my mind has the 2010 election wiped... That's why I said it was a stretch. I know she isn't a Liberal Democrat technically, but it is the "equivalent" party and interesting that they could beat the DUP who have a completely different sort of politics. Just a bit of fun after all....

One that's just struck me as never to be repeated: North Down going from UPUP to UKUP, mainly because both were one-man bands.
But then later on, we had the bizarre spectacle of the Green gain from the UKUP in the Assembly.

UKUP gain from UPUP in Bridlington really would be weird. Perhaps there could be a Private Member's Bill to establish one particular constituency, chosen at random, to be a sort-of rotten borough to be contested only by weird eccentrics and micro-parties. There would be a long list of self-important pompous and bombastic candidates representing all sorts of poujadist or populist splinter groups, all of whom think they are the new messiah. A bit like Robert Kilroy-Silk without the charisma, or David Icke without the common sense. In electoral terms it would be like the Speaker's constituency but without the Speaker. It could be Bridlington this time, but a different constituency each election. The whole thing would be even more bizarre and fun than the idea of a one-man-band political party calling itself the "Popular" Unionist Party.

Are Bangor NI and Brid actually all that different? (Not been to Norn Iron so don't know for myself.)

Bangor NI is full of people with more cut-glass English accents than Brid. It's awfully posh (well, the suburbs and surrounding villages certainly are).

Aye, Kilcooley is so posh it's twinned with Mayfair.
