This means that this parliamentary term (at just about the half-way mark) will already be tying for the most changes of MSPs with the 2003-2007 parliament.

There are now 34 remaining MSPs who have served continuously since the Parliament was established - just over a quarter of the Parliament.
(By comparison, 19 out of the 60 AMs have served continuously since 1999, a slightly higher proportion. Only 24 out of 108 members of the Northern Ireland Assembly have served continuously since 1998.)

No offence intended, but the number of parliamentarians sadly passing away seems to be a lot higher in Scotland these days compared to the rest of the UK.

It's interesting - each of the first three scottish parliaments only had 1 MSP each passing away whilst in office - Donald Dewar, Margaret Ewing and Bashir Ahmad. We've had three in two and a half years this time.

Sad though this is, it's fair to say that I wasn't expecting another Fife parliamentary by-election quite so soon!

I suppose in the earliest years there should have been few. Barring transferred from Westminster there must have been a younger/healthy age profile.

But now the profile is still Scottish and also older. Yes but we must take into account the rapid expansion of Gregg's north of the Border undermining our healthy diet of deep fried pizza with their Geordie fast food imports.

I was going to say that 'Cowdenbeath' is a bit of a misnomer really. It's basically what's left over when you get the other Fife seats right.

We've had three in two and a half years this time. Three? I can only think of two deaths - the third by-election was caused by a resignation.

The word I have heard is that the by-election wont be until the new year now. Nobody will really be in the mood for it.
