Well, acceptable behaviour isn't exactly the issue. I see it to be very much 'the issue'.

He deserved to lose. He then confirmed he deserved it. Objectively, he's had too much airtime. He's not even in the government. LBC etc haven't got the memo. I'm not really sure what he did wrong, other than not pander to non-integrated elements of his seat. He was just a pretty standard Labour MP. I don't know the constituency other than its ethnic diversity, but I believe Ashworth lost because he refused to vote for a ceasefire. It'd be funny if he stood here and lost again. However, unlike Leicester South, Runcorn is properly safe for Labour and with a. 12% lead in this seat in 2019, I don't see Labour losing here.

Even if Israel were to somehow be interested in the views of a solitary English MP, Hamas have basically made clear they will never be interested in a lasting peace. There will therefore not be a ceasefire. Given the difference in military capabilities, the war will end with the destruction of Hamas, and given the fact they've basically built a rabbit warren that essentially means the destruction of Gaza. Very sad that people's lives and homes are being lost, but the die is long cast now. Basing one's vote on that topic beyond all others, when British MPs have no meaningful power to influence events is absurd.

No left-wing independent candidate winning here. Ashworth would have no trouble, realistically. Labour vote still weighed in parts. Let’s see what happens with Amesbury.

However, this won't be a Runcorn and Helsby.

I have no idea if Ashworth would look at this if a by election occurred, but somebody would be well advised to repeat the words "Patrick Gordon Walker" to him at least a thousand times .

the by-election that Patrick Gordon Walker lost was one which was for the convenience of the Labour Government. A by-election here would not be.

Agree on the general point that such a move would be risky, but this would be a coincidental by-election opportunity whereas I think Patrick Gordon Walker’s attempted return was manipulated from the start?

Yes - immediately after Parliament met, the Labour whips started asking older Labour MPs with (supposedly) safe seats, which one of them would be willing to go to the Lords to provide a seat for Patrick Gordon Walker. Reginald Sorensen initially wasn't keen but later accepted and Leyton CLP had already indicated it would have Gordon Walker on 13 November 1964 - less than a month after the general election.

I am now really looking forward to this by-election caused by indisputable, on-film, uber-thuggish behaviour by a vicious quite out of control Labour MP. The 'optics' as you chaps term them could not be better. He has to go and we have to get our by-election. No back-room whitewash can kill this. He is an ex-MP and we can have our enjoyable day at the polls. I sense that we can win this. Bring it on and let's hope for a few more like it. I loved the idea floated by ricmk that we hadn't enough video to draw a conclusion. I'd love to understand what can render a full force punch to the face to a guy with his hands in his pockets acceptable behaviour.I don't want him to go to prison - a suspended sentence for a one off offender would be plenty - but I can't see how he could ever be restored to the Labour whip. "I've got a knife in my pocket..."?

I mean, until we know the full circumstances we cannot make an absolute final judgement. The actual filmed footage certainly does not look good at all, and if it is correct this is unconnected with the recent stalking incident than that on the face of it makes things worse for Amesbury. But it will all come out in the wash.

I don't think a left wing independent would win here either - but they could take enough votes from disillusioned Labour voters to allow Reform through the middle. Selecting Ashworth would encourage that.

But it will all come out in the wash. The very fact that the stalking incident occurred makes it a factor even if the victim of this assault had no knowldge of it. Amesbury had knowledge of it. We had copious amounts of wimpy pleading in the run up to the election about how dreadfully traumatic it is to be an MP and how they needed protection. I see all of that has been forgotten. Which is fine because I disrespected it at the time.

There are still some Tory-friendly areas. Reform squeezing might not be enough.
