Ken Maddock in Mendip is a blast from the past. He was leader of Somerset CC from 2009-12, when he stood down to be the Conservative candidate for the Avon and Somerset PCC, which he lost.
I don’t think he has stood for election since 2012, and I had assumed he had rather disappeared. He didn’t stand in the unitary election, Given the pointless nature of the current election, perhaps no other Conservatives wanted to stand.
Be a shame if he lost…..

Yes, she's very active and was an unusually high profile town councillor before. Was also the Labour candidate for the parliamentary constituency in 2017. The division doesn't quite include the parts of the town you might think from its name: High Town and surrounds are actually in the East & Etc. division, which is o/c not unhelpful from a Labour perspective. Division is a mixture of working class residential areas (which have a history of good Labour votes - the poor Labour results in recent decades were as odd from that perspective as the very good, personal profile driven one last year), humdrum middle class suburbs and affluent commuter villages - not quite sure why it isn't split into two more coherent single member divisions really. |

PJP = People's Justice Party, what was JFK? Justice for Kashmir. Yes, they emerged in the late 90's, then renamed themselves People's Justice Party to generalise their appeal, and finally dissolved in 2006, with a lot of the members joining the Lib Dems. Shaukat Ali Khan was at one stage their group leader in the Council House. |

Re Sparkbrook - we've fought a campaign (two leaflets and I believe quite a bit of door knocking) having presumably done nothing the last time the seat was fought in May, so I would expect our vote to go up, although that doesn't mean I think we are going to win (I have done some delivering but that's all, so I'm not very close to the campaign). Both our candidate and the Tory are former councillors (the Tory defected from Labour last year but couldn't hold his seat). One Labour leaflet I've seen makes something of the fact that their candidate is the only one of the "main" candidates who has not previously stood somewhere else. The Tories have put out at least one leaflet (featuring a classic Lib Dem style bar chart complete with "Can't win here") but as far as I know the Greens haven't done anything. The local environment is an issue on most parties' leaflets as far as I have seen
