It isn't in North Shropshire - it's in Ludlow Why is one named with a compass point and the other a large town in the seat? (yes, trying to change the subject) There is no logic to this whatsoever. Prior to 1983 the respective seats were named Oswestry and Ludlow. Then despite only minor boundary changes (both seats gained parts of the Wrekin), Oswestry was renamed North Shropshire and Ludlow retained the name Ludlow. North Shropshire at that time comprised the entire districts of North Shropshire and Oswestry (plus part of the Wrekin). North Shropshire was the largest element so that may have been the rationale. On the other hand the Ludlow seat comprised South Shropshire and Bridgenorth districts (plus part of the Wrekin), so they might just as well have renamed that seat as South Shropshire at the same time. This was a bad time for constituecny names in Shropshire as it was also when they added the totally unnecessary "& Atcham" to the name of Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury and Atcham was the name of the LG district, and I believe the district and constituency shared a common boundary.

The biggest question about Lampeter here in Ceredigion is "Is Dinah Mulholland, a former town councillor who resigned over the issue of a memorial that was denied planning for, as much as a Labour vote magnet as Hag Harris?" and the general opinion I have been getting is "No, nothing like" Tbf she is probably better known as the Labour candidate for Ceredigion at the last two GEs, though that evidently didn't help as much as they might have hoped.

(yes, trying to change the subject) Because one of the statutory criteria of the Boundary Commission is that they have to be frantically and absurdly deranged when they think of names.

Mendip, Butleigh and Baltonsborough Ken Maddock, Con, 393 Claire Sully, LD, 389 Turnout 39% I think we can reasonably surmise that postal votes - many cast pre-polling crash - saved the Tories in this one.

It isn't entirely clear what happened in her service on the town council and how this linked to her resignation. Whatever the issue was didn't prompt the deceased councillor to resign. In this small-town world these things make a difference.

Bridgnorth is nowhere near North Shropshire. Culturally it has as little in common with it as is possible to find in Shropshire - it looks more towards Wolverhampton (from where rather a lot of families moved to the town in the 1960s for... er... reasons...), Stourbridge, Kidderminster and so on. Incidentally, the town centre (known as High Town) is every bit as pretty as the equivalent district in Ludlow, though is not in this division. Shrewsbury and Atcham was the name of the LG district, and I believe the district and constituency shared a common boundary. Yes, though the renaming still made no sense. 'Atcham' was a reference to the former Atcham Rural District, which basically covered the parts of the constituency outside Shrewsbury borough. No one actually identifies with 'Atcham', which is actually a tiny village to the South East of the town. Its 'significance' stems from the presence of Attingham Park.

I should think the Conservatives would be reasonably happy with this week, given their national polling.

I should think the Conservatives would be reasonably happy with this week, given their national polling. Written just after their vote slumped in Bournemouth I wouldn't go overboard about it, especially given the number of postal votes cast weeks ago.

I should think the Conservatives would be reasonably happy with this week, given their national polling. I don’t think the drop to 20-25% in the national polls is quite being reflected in local polls ( yet?). Although as has been said, quite a few of these Conservative votes would have been cast 3 weeks ago. I am surprised the LD’s didn’t win Mendip. That general area was probably the best area of Somerset for them in May. And a straight 2 way fight would have helped them too.. Based on the county results, I suspect that ward was very close in May, so probably not much movement since then. The LD candidate wasn’t as local as the Conservative was so that may have been decisive in a 4 vote win, although she is one of the County Councillors for these villages so would have some name recognition.

Significant perhaps that the two best Tory results this week were with the LibDems as the main/sole opposition.
Their failure to benefit from the recent poll collapse has been noted.

I wonder just how much effort they (or the Tories) made given that the council goes the way of Monty Python’s parrot in six months; it was something of an exercise in futility, and not one repeated in areas such as Cumbria and other parts of Somerset who appear to be keeping vacancies unfilled.

It might help if you think of Butleigh and Baltonsborough as being the sort of places where parents send their kids to the very expensive Millfield School as day pupils.
