Bagshaw has now resigned, but Dean Rhodes, the independent here, is nominated by Paul Mann.

It is frustrating when candidates stand on a platform which they know has no relevance to the authority concerned, or which they know is purely opportunistic and can’t actually be delivered but reads well in a leaflet.

One learns to live with such candidates, markgoodair , as the price we pay for an open democratic system.

I got used to it some years ago when I tried explaining to my UKIP colleagues that Bournemouth Council as it then was did not have the power to leave the EU and maybe a little on the leaflet about local issues might not go a miss. But making issues irrelevant to the election in question the mainstay of your campaign does look rather foolish to anyone who is reasonably well informed about the workings of our political system.

As soon as you got into the minutiae of local polices you ran the risk of generating internal disagreements and, more importantly, putting off local voters who might vote for the generic UKIP brand but may be put off by a specififc local policy.
This is how you and me (who disagree on almost every other issue) were able to coalesce in the same party for so long. This is how paper candidates got elected to (for example) Lincolnshire county council. This is how Cameron was bounced into getting our referendum and the referendum was won because UKIP activists (amongst others) were focussed on this one issue rather than worrying about how often the bins are collected in Boscombe

Well the point I was trying to make back in the day was rather that by focusing on local issues, people could be elected who could then show the party was getting somewhere and was a credible option for Parliament, similar to other branches that succeeded in getting a number of councillors elected. Personally, I think UKIP achieved more success that it otherwise would have by showing people that its members cared about the same issues they cared about. When I got involved in Ferndown, our council group focused on opposing large scale development on the greenbelt, and for many years got a lot of votes out of it.

I don't think they did. Our local UKIP campaigned during the referendum on the basis (among sundry other claims) that the local school had become an academy due to the EU. When I pointed out to them that education was very much a reserved matter and the EU had no hand in this, I had a blank look from the chap handing out the leaflets. If the people handing out the leaflets didn't know that their claims were baseless, what hope the average punter who is less informed than this?

You're discussing something entirely different here. I was not talking about the referendum (obviously as nobody voted for 'UKIP' in the referendum). I was talking about local elections prior to that and pointing out that people who voted for UKIP overwhelmingly did so as a protest against a) the EU and b) the direction of the Conservative party under David Cameron. That is what i meant by voters knowing what they were voting for (ie against) and that it had nothing to do with whatever detailed plans they may or may not have had for running the local council. What you say is actually supporting my point rather than contradicting it.
