Quite a few people backing a Lib Dem win in Hampstead Town, could see them taking over as favourites soon. I've heard from an LD staffer that they believe they are in with a chance. Labour would probably have been the favourites here but Starmers position on Brexit could prove to be a an early Christmas present for the Lib Dems in this ultra remain area.

I don't think they did. Our local UKIP campaigned during the referendum on the basis (among sundry other claims) that the local school had become an academy due to the EU. When I pointed out to them that education was very much a reserved matter and the EU had no hand in this, I had a blank look from the chap handing out the leaflets. If the people handing out the leaflets didn't know that their claims were baseless, what hope the average punter who is less informed than this? You're discussing something entirely different here. I was not talking about the referendum (obviously as nobody voted for 'UKIP' in the referendum). I was talking about local elections prior to that and pointing out that people who voted for UKIP overwhelmingly did so as a protest against a) the EU and b) the direction of the Conservative party under David Cameron. That is what i meant by voters knowing what they were voting for (ie against) and that it had nothing to do with whatever detailed plans they may or may not have had for running the local council. What you say is actually supporting my point rather than contradicting it.No it isn't. If you are voting for a party and you don't know their policies are based on a fallacy, you objectively don't know what you are voting for. What I say is contradicting your point, not supporting it.

I really don't think most people will be taking that into account when they vote in this byelection, whatever the result.

Regrettably the actions of the very short-term former member seem a more likely factor.

Andrew is not quite right about Adrian Cohen, the Labour councillor who resigned so quickly in Hampstead Town ward. He was until very recently a long-standing solicitor for the law firm Clifford Chance, although their work would involve contact with clients in the financial sector. And he did do some canvassing in his campaign - though not very much.

My apologies, I was going off what I could find in (IIRC) the local press.

a lot of people did say he hadn't canvassed, including Jewish News - but I've seen a picture of him having a friendly chat with a dog while out canvassing in his campaign. He did canvass humans too.

Nice preview for Milton Keynes. You can see the southern half of the ward I represented immediately to the east of today's ward, up to the River Ouzel - beautiful villages which have been absorbed into the wider city.
The Fishermead estate is just as strong as the rest of Woughton for Labour, it really is a perfectly designed ward for them, and will be key to making the new 'Central Milton Keynes' seat competitive at the GE.
The only issue is that Sue Smith is described as the chair of Woughton on the Green PC. She is chair of Woughton PC. This might not sound like a big deal but it is. There was a messy divorce back in 2012 when the wealthy residents of Woughton on the Green decided they'd had enough of being in a parish with some of the poorest areas of MK, and felt they were subsidising it and getting little back. They successfully lobbied to form their own parish called "Old Woughton" which is in the ward I represented. While there was huge support in the new parish area, it left a bitter taste in the mouth as it was about a wealthy area not wanting to support the immediate neighbours who were powerless to object. There was then a big campaign to reinforce the split at the 2014 ward boundary review which led to the strangely shaped Campbell Park and Old Woughton ward I represented. Mix them up at your peril! I hope there can be some neighbourly reconciliation in time but I see no prospect of that parish split ever being reversed.
Lib Dem candidate Raisa Roy won't do well but is a lovely Ukrainian lady who supported our ward for years.

Especially Campbell Park, which doesn't look like it includes the eponymous green space.

Lib Dem candidate Raisa Roy won't do well but is a lovely Ukrainian lady who supported our ward for years. MK's parish boundaries do seem very odd. Especially Campbell Park, which doesn't look like it includes the eponymous green space. Yeah this was the other messy aspect of the 2012 parish boundary 'community governance' review. Campbell Park area was previously in Campbell Park parish. The residences in Campbell Park (in my ward) looked to the city centre so strongly wanted to join the central town Council. I didn't feel strongly but was happy to support them. Overwhelming support for that one. That left 2 problems with Campbell Park parish 1) the name 2) it basically left the parish disconnected with the only join to the estate of Willen being across a large lake (our Mersey Banks.) There was a much narrower vote to take the Willen area out of Campbell Park parish as well, to go into the parish surrounding it on all other sides. The Willen area (also in my ward then) was marginally in favour of the move but not overwhelmingly. I supported the move on balance, and it passed Full Council by a tiny majority (might even have been 1 vote.) Campbell Park parish council were mad and took MKC to judicial review, and won on a technicality. So both problems remain to this day, and the issue is toxic enough no one has dared to go back to it since. It must indeed look very odd viewing from afar, but there is some tricky history for how it got there.

It could hardly be a better week for them, given they have only one defence, and that in the valley of the Moles.
