The figures posted above for Wealden are inconsistent. If the total votes are 1056, this would suggest 589 Green Party votes (55.8%). David gives 598. Which is correct?

We had a lovely week in Stalham last August (2020) First time visiting the Norfolk Broads, although we went to the beach more days. It felt like a place that should elect Lib Dems! I wonder if it's going to be a difficult ride there without Norman Lamb to hang activity on.

Stalham (North Norfolk) by-election result: CON: 55.2% (+25.9) LDEM: 37.0% (-11.1) LAB: 7.8% (-0.2) Conservative GAIN from Liberal Democrat. No Grn (-14.6) as prev. Votes cast: 1,013 This seems to confirm the theory that in local by-elections voters react against the party in control of the local authority.

Hermitage (Breckland) by-election result: CON: 45.0% (-26.3) LDEM: 40.9% (+40.9) LAB: 12.2% (-16.5) WPGB: 1.9% (+1.9) Conservative HOLD. Votes cast: 540 Ours next time. I'm not sure there's grounds for so much cockiness here. It's quite common to see these huge swings away from the Conservatives in safe and generally undercontested wards in Norfolk and Suffolk in by-elections only for that to unwind in the following full round of local elections. That is the case even when the Lib Dems have gained seats - when they don't manage even that then any momentum is going to evaporate pretty quickly and of course you aren't going to be able to draw on the large number of outside activists who will have descended on the area for this by-election (this ward borders North Norfolk afterall)

Did the Lib Dems take their eye of the ball in Stalham to work in Brecklands?

Cons drop from previous holders to 4th place? Fascinating party movements here: Lib Dems from 4th to 1st Green from 5th to 2nd MBI from 1st to 3rd Con from 2nd to 4th Lab from 3rd to 5th Definitely a volatile electorate!

2pm. Let me guess, they need the morning for the RO to brush up on Gaelic pronunciation. Given the area at this time of year it’s probably at least that before the roads are passable to get to the count! It is a ward containing my Scottish solicitors and the site of two houses visited in 1997 when house searching on the West coast. It is a very wet area but gets far less snow than Sheffield or much of central Italy for that matter. There will be no problems at all on the roads.

To state the obvious, local by-elections are heavily influenced by local factors - candidate choice, party organisation, local issues, reputation of the council. Yes, there's some reflection of the national picture but turnouts are generally low and one would expect local elements often to overwhelm that backdrop. Glancing through these there are some seemingly odd results (in terms of good Tory performances), probably explained by one or more of the factors I've listed.
