The final Labour MP to vote for capital punishment in 1975 was Peter Doig (Dundee West). He was a firm believer in laura norder who spoke out in favour of emergency regulations to crack down on strikers. Like many right-wingers he opposed Scottish devolution in the 1970s. He joined the SDP in 1981.

If the Tory seat up in Furnace Green last year had been fought this year, their situation would have been much worse.

Small note - in Littlemoor and Preston ward, the Conservatives easily won both seats, which means that Peter Dickenson was "re-elected" but presumably will now be able to take up his seat. I must have missed something - why couldn't he before? Dorset website says that his first term as councillor started on 1st March 2024, but he doesn't seem to be listed in the by-elections thread for 29th February 2024. He was disqualified at the time of nomination (because he was a lollipop man employed by the council) so his election in January was void. He chose to formally accept office on 1 March, although there were no council meetings from then until the full council election and the new term.

I expect there will be a lot of local comment linking tactical votes for Labour in Banbury with tactical votes for Lib Dems in Bicester and Woodstock.

Counting at the polling stations and collating the total result later is how almost everyone else counts elections. The UK is very unusual in having the formal and final legal declaration of the result done at a central count within hours of the votes being cast.

Unless someone's been forging ballot papers and surreptitiously adding them to ballot boxes, I can't see any way ballot papers can properly be rejected for want of official mark unless the voter had torn it off.
So I strongly suspect someone at Brent and Harrow misinterpreted the rules. That being said I spotted one rejected for want of official mark at the West Central count and I couldn't see anything wrong with it - the official mark appeared to be present and correct.

Labour being only 1.2% behind in Central Bedfordshire would be astounding were it not influenced by the Mid Bedfordshire byelection.

Don't think I'm breaking any confidences to say that James Small-Edwards is not giving up his seat on Westminster City Council after being elected to the London Assembly.
