Off topic but how are local councillors replaced in Northern Ireland when they resign, are disqualified, etc?

Off topic but how are local councillors replaced in Northern Ireland when they resign, are disqualified, etc? Co-option by the party. In case of independents, I think they can submit a name to replace them if they resign or die. Same thing for Assembly. |

Incidentally, there is a belief amongst political parties that a candidate stands a better chance at the polls, if they have some kind of incumbency and recognition factor, if the candidate is well-known locally.
In the six months before the last set of local elections in Northern Ireland, there was a spate of resignations, with the CEONI appointing new individuals, who then stood in the upcoming elections as an "incumbent" !!

12 April - 3
Chichester DC, Rogate - Conservative resigned - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, Green
St Edmundsbury BC, St Olave's - Labour resigned - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, Ind
South Northamptonshire DC, Middleton Cheney - Conservative resigned - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, Green
19 April - 3
