Because in respect of England and Wales, Christmas Day and Good Friday are covered by Section 1 of the main text, so they do not need to be listed in the schedule to the Act.

Hmm. not sure about that.
Subsection (1) "Subject to subsection (2) below, the days specified in Schedule 1 to this Act shall be bank holidays in England and Wales, in Scotland and in Northern Ireland as indicated in the Schedule."
Subsection 2 relates to a power to declare a day a bank holiday in a particular year.
Subsection 4 "No person shall be compellable to make any payment or to do any act on a bank holiday under this Act which he would not be compellable to make or do on Christmas Day or Good Friday..."
Good Friday is then essentially a day that is treated as a bank holiday for certain purposes.

Hmm, yes, it's that subsection which appears to be the substantive one, and seems to suggest that those days have been treated as days of rest and commemoration for a long time beforehand as a matter of course. It could be an oversight, but I wouldn't want to try to challenge it in court and potentially force a lot of people to work on Christmas Day all of a sudden!

The 1971 Act specifies that the schedule of dates are to be treated as though they were Christmas Day or Good Friday. What banking and financial transactions are complellable on those days is defined in Common Law (outside Scotland, which is why Christmas Day is specified in Scotland).

Weymouth will now not be holding elections this year. does this mean Weymouth West no longer falls under the 6 month rule? (It is now more than a year till the next theoretical election for the ward).

(It is now more than a year till the next theoretical election for the ward). I await guidance from David / A N Other but I have already moved Weymouth West into the pending column. I think there were some Exeter and Norwich vacancies in 2010 which moved in and out of being covered by the six month rule but I don't think there's an exact precedent. On a preliminary view the six month rule isn't something that is triggered once and then invalidates any subsequent attempt to hold a byelection, so now the 2018 elections are cancelled and the terms extended, it is possible to call the Weymouth West byelection. I imagine it will be on 3 May.

Burnley councillor Mohammed Ishtiaq, Labour, Queensgate ward, has left the council as of the 21st February. Presume resignation as he was present at a council meeting that day and was replaced on the relevant committees then. 2015-19 term, probably a double vacancy in May.

Hambidge, not Hambridge. It's really difficult to type her name correctly as you really want to put the 'r' in.

I've been to Chichester once for a few hours, in January 1999. Just decided to get on a train and go there for no particular reason. Stupidly I didn't visit the cathedral which is probably the number one attraction.
