The Bolton Council website must be the worst in the UK for Electoral Services. Not only is the SOPN not yet shown on the election pages for the Farnworth by-election nearly 6 days after nominations closed - nor identified using the search engine - but also there is no Notice of Election for this election whilst the result of the Hulton by-election held on 18 January is shown only in the News section but not the Elections section I photographed the Notice of Election on the council noticeboard last week. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get into town this week to photograph the SOPN.

Sad news today of the death of Sheila Newman, Labour councillor for Chorlton ward on Manchester city council since 1999. She was also Lady Mayoress - married to Eddie Newman, former MEP and councillor for Woodhouse Park ward.

Regret to report the death of Elias Mattu, Mayor of Wolverhampton and Labour councillor for Graiseley ward. He was a very good contributor to discussion particularly around inter-borough bus services on CENTRO and he can't have been more than 60.

I can't see tweets when accessing via my work VPN. Twitter is completely blocked. This is exceptionally annoying when trying to access the BBC who seem to have whole stories just made up of embedded twats these days.

The by-elections in Fylde, Heyhouses and Taunton Deane, Wiveliscombe/W Deane have both been called for 5th April.
There appear to be no by-elections on 29th March, which is Maundy Thursday.

There appear to be no by-elections on 29th March, which is Maundy Thursday. Well, until about 12 years ago, by-elections on Maundy Thursday were of course illegal. Perhaps some councils' electoral services officers have forgotten about the change to the law, or else are just religious and socially conservative so try to avoid counts potentially carrying on into Good Friday?

Would there be additional costs finishing the count on Good Friday? That's a very good point, actually. It's not just deference to a Christian observance – having to pay bank holiday rates to staff could be an important consideration in these straitened times.
