I think that Hester Smallbone would have approved of this all-female contest (although not cared for the outcome).
15th September 1988, Odsal ward, Bradford MDC:-
Elaine Byrom Con 2665 Linda Woodward Lab 2154 Jean Micklethwaite SLD 271 Dorothy Hartley SDP 93
Con gain from Lab.
The vacancy had been caused by the resignation of Cllr. Edward Johnson. Before his resignation he had defected to the Conservatives then, rather promptly, returned to the Labour benches.
The constitution of the council now stood at Con 45, Lab 43 and 2 SLD. The mayor, Cllr. Smith Midgley (Con, Worth Valley), cast two votes in the chamber to break any deadlock and therefore the Conservatives assumed control of Bradford MDC. The new council leader was...Eric Pickles...and the rest is 'history'...

Just checked the handbook and 13,000 electors in Odsal for 1988. Still a v.good turnout for a by-election. A finely balanced council and the rates increases led to some fierce fights.

Didn't go to Beeston, but the SDP/All slimeball later defected to Labour. I was proud to be the Election Agent for the Lib Dem candidate that defeated him the one and only time he stood for Labour - in Burmantofts ward in May 1992. The successful candidate in Beeston is now the Labour MP for Hemsworth and Jeremy Corbyn's 'right hand man'. He rose to be Leader of Leeds City Council quite quickly after this by-election - about five years, I recall.

You wouldn't by any chance happen to have the result for the Haringey byelection in High Cross ward on 15 June 1967? I know everything about this byelection (candidates, electorate, total number of votes cast) save for how the votes were distributed. Only mention this one because it's the only London borough council election result since 1964 that I don't have.

I know everything about this byelection (candidates, electorate, total number of votes cast) save for how the votes were distributed. Only mention this one because it's the only London borough council election result since 1964 that I don't have. I am quite interested in knowing about that by-election too, not for any psephological reason in this case but for personal and family reasons. My in-laws lived on High Cross Road which I assume may have been in High Cross ward (I really ought to to know better than to make that assumption with any certainty). My father-in-law died in November 1965, so my mother-in-law was living there alone in 1966, so my wife and I would have spent quite a lot of time up in High Cross Road keeping her company, but have no recollection of a by-election in 1967. At some time after that and I have no recollection now as to whether that was a matter of months or years nearly all of High Cross Rd was pulled down and has never been replaced- Monument Way now covers up much of that- and my mother-in-law was rehoused in a block of flats very close to the Spurs ground. I am wondering whether the demolition process was in progress at the time of the election? I went back to look at the area again a year or two ago -got into High Cross church where Eileen & I were married in December 1961- and only one house now remains in the area I used to know, a big Georgian property known as The Big House in my day (but not said like that- more like the Big'Ass!)
