I imagine you particularly like the one with Caplin ( I assume that's Ivor)as the Labour candidate in a ward called Wish.....I assume this isn't a gigantic hoax? Indeed - I expect he didn't imagine that within 15 years he would be the local MP. Brunswick & Adelaide ward was probably the mostly strongly Labour ward in the constituency at the last general election

Greater Manchester County Council by-elections 1973-1985 13.6.85 - Manchester No.16 - Garside (Lab) Unop 5.9.85 - Manchester (Prestwich) - Greenhalgh (Lab)2264, Wachman (SDP/Lib)1163, Berg (Non=Socialist)942 If these look a bit wierd, note that after the abolition Act was passed, the Conservatives decided not to nominate any candidates for Metropolitan County Councils other than in seats they held. I wonder if that 'Non-Socialist' is Geoffrey Berg, later of Salford?

I wonder if that 'Non-Socialist' is Geoffrey Berg, later of Salford? I wondered that too - I seem to remember he had a Prestwich connection. My parents would have been eligible to vote in that by-election, but I suspect they've long forgotten it if they ever cared in the first place.

Liberals finishing third in any by-election in the town of (Great) Malvern-even in the 1970s that was a low point indeed, especially with only Malvern Langland capable of returning Labour councillors there at district level!

Hertfordshire County Council by-elections 1973-1985 29.3.79 - Bushey No.2 (Heath) - Pryde (Con)1779, Shone (Lib)344, Heminsley (Lab)169 I do have some recollection of this by-election at the time, mostly because I knew Ron Pryde's children but also because the school I and they attended was a polling station so I would have had a welcome day off school - I do remember these events occurring with some frequency at some time and I guess 1979 would have been it with this being the first of three visits to the polls that year (1973/4 would have been another relatively busy period but i'm not sure I was even at the school in June 1973) It's odd that Baldock was unopposed. I assume that was most likely a cock-up as it was a marginal seat which the Conservatives would probably have gained. Had they done so it would have given them exactly half the seats and then gaining Colney Heath & London Colney the following year would have given them a majority.
