A pity about the numbered, non-descriptive ward names. Never a good thing.

North Yorkshire County Council by-elections 1973-1985 8.1.76 - York (Guildhall) - Oxtoby (Con)755, Guy (Lib)646, Marsh (Lab)361, Brown (N.F)37 I bet this is Les Marsh. Defected from Lab to Lib. Elected in Beckfield, 1979. Caught making 'less than truthful' statements on his ward newsletter. Rumour that council officials dobbed him in. Quite a stink. He lost his seat in 1983.

West Yorkshire County Council by-elections 1973-1985 1973-1977 26.3.76 - Halifax No.1 - Jeffreys (Lab)2215, Walker (Con)1603, Durkin (Lib)420 It was v.debatable who was the most right-wing candidate in this contest. Jeffreys was a former Tory Halifax CB councillor. A 'larger than life' character (and a large man who sadly died too young). He hated namby-pamby social workers with a passion. Very popular in the division, which saw an extremely rare pro-Lab swing in 1977. Walker was a headmaster...of the Boyson ilk. Durkin flip-flopped between blue and yellow for years.

So what drove him into the arms of the Labour Party, do you know?

Fairly certain it was Ted Heath and the economic policies of his government (their effect upon Halifax etc).

Hope my postings over the past few weeks has been useful to those who seek out this type of data. I will now return to continue establishing a data base for the pre 1945 local elections results. I have completed London Boroughs 1900-1962, London County Council 1889-1961 and County Boroughs for England & Wales 1945-1972 (Including Scotland's 4 city Councils of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen & Dundee which have been published via the Election's Centre in book form. Currently I am in the process of compiling the results for the Non County Boroughs 1945-1972 (approximately two thirds completed). What I have done so far can be accessed at the Election Centre's website and downloaded if required. There are many gaps still to fill so hope somebody out there may have something which may help in its completion. Will post more information later. Please contact me if I can assist with anything that has been published.

The first by-election for Calderdale MBC had an extremely sad cause. Councillor Graham Wood and his wife were killed in the March 1974 Paris air crash. Three children left orphaned. Labour gained the seat at the by-election.
22nd May 1974 Brighouse - Cunningham LAB 1428 Lockwood CON 1322 Williams LIB 684.
(Samson Williams had been a Labour alderman on the old Brighouse MB. He wasn't selected for the Calderdale 1973 elections so stood unsuccessfully as a Socialist).
Amongst the press clippings there's a Calderdale by-election that I had missed.
25th June 1981 Hipperholme & Lightcliffe - Bottomley CON 1094 Howarth LAB 920 Binns LIB 746.
The by-election was caused by the retirement of Cllr Dan Crinall (Con) who had been in poor health for a couple of years. Derek Bottomley had retired (on health grounds) as Head of Science at Hipperholme Grammar School. Sadly Cllr Bottomley died within seven months (no by-election six-month rule). I have an inkling that Dan Crinall outlived him.
