There's no such thing as a long walk to the polling station - it is either a short walk (as mine is currently) or it's a short drive (or has in carlton's case perhaps quite a long drive). I can imagine thought that driving to and parking at this particular location could be annoying and awkward Have you not heard of a bicycle?

Useless fact- I shall be working and staying in Abbey ward for a week next month. There's worse places to be sent on a training course! If it is during the Christmas market (24 Nov to 11 Dec) you will find getting round particularly difficult, especially anywhere near the abbey. There are far more people around than even during the middle of the summer tourist season.

They will be crowded too, though there are plenty of them, and most are pretty decent.

You are like a teenaged lamb. No one has difficulty getting to the Bingo or the Football Stadium or the Supermarket, or home from the back street night club in the small hours, but out come all these bleeding heart nonsense statements as soon as we talk about voting. Perhaps we should have council officials who personally call at the door after giving written prior advice and a reminder telephone call? Perhaps each elector should be given an M&S Voucher for £5 for having his vote ready to be collected? Perhaps those who could not be bothered to be in that evening should be permitted to ask for a call on another day that suits them better?

It was intended as a statement of fact about how urban dwellers increasing do not have access to a car. Nobody is asking for any special favours, no need for a vastly overblown reaction. How typical of UKIP.

My polling station ( if I did not have a postal vote ) is a good 15-20 minutes walk each way with no public transport . This is in an urban area .

Of course we all know that not everyone has access to a car. It is a known. It is a given. It does not need to be stated as it is palpably bloody obvious. So, why say it? It isn't information. Deconstruct the underlying intentionality. Oh look............It was a pathetic little bleat! Oh yes it was.

It was a response to Pete's post that suggested that anybody whose polling station isn't a "short walk" away would drive to the polling station. If the response was a "bleat", then surely the post it was responding to was also a "bleat". Rendering this whole side-discussion entirely pointless.

I would agree that those living in towns and cities shouldn't have any problem getting to their polling stations to vote. Indeed, it is commonplace for campaigners to offer the locals (especially the elderly and infirm) a lift to the polling station on request, wherever they live. But I do think carlton43 needs to tone it down. The only bleating is coming from the sheep who have to jump out the way as he drives to his local polling station (at least, that's the image conjured up in my mind of the sort of area in which he resides). Let's drop this now, shall we, and get back to talking about tomorrow's by-elections.

"Bad weather forecast" is a bit of an understatement - the forecast is heavy rain *all day* I would expect fairly significant depression of turnout. The majority of votes will already have been cast by post, and the Party best organised on talking to postal voters will probably win....

Indeed, though in this case the numbers cast by post so far have been less than I had expected.

Or the most organised party at collecting in postal voting forms, filling them in and handing them in........... Saves you all the hassle mr/mrs/miss voter just sign on the back here to say you voted we will do the rest.
