What if a border poll was held and people voted 52% to 48% to join the republic, would the result be respected?

In short yes, but it might be a rather tortuous route getting there. Not unlike now, really.

I'm sure some loyalists wouldn't respect the result, while in recent years, I agree that the Westminster government would. But there's no point since 1922 where a border poll had any chance of going this way - so my question would be, what else would have changed to produce the result? If it was, e.g. a boycott by unionists, that might be problematic.

What if a border poll was held and people voted 52% to 48% to join the republic, would the result be respected? Yes, because (a) such a referendum would only be held in the first place if a majority of both communities agreed to it happening (in accordance with the usual weighted majority voting rules) and on the basis of accepting the result. In other words, there would only be such a referendum if the DUP were in a substantially non-grumpy and conciliatory mood. (b) such a referendum would only be held if the Republic of Ireland agreed to absorbing the North into its territory.

Your points are well made, but given recent events one might be a tad wary of asserting that something could "NEVER" happen
