Interesting detail in this story: www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/05/06/did-macron-outsmart-campaign-hackersThe Macron campaign realised that the Kremlin was backing Le Pen and would try to hack them, so deliberately seeded the phishing sites with their websites and passwords to their accounts - mixing genuine ones with lots of fake ones, and also planted lots of obviously fake documents on the site. That ensured it took a long time for the hackers to work out what they were getting (so it only got revealed when the French press were in their pre-election blackout period) and also ensured no-one could be sure what was genuine and what was fake.

Various Belgian sources reporting projections of 62%+ for Macron.
At 5pm turnout was around 65%, 6% lower than 2012.

People are trying to get round the ban on reporting exit polls in some uninspired ways.

Early estimates have Macron 62.5 apparently.

The really interesting thing will be the regional and departemental results.

The really interesting thing will be the regional and departemental results. Hard to see her winning any department on a 65:35 split. Perhaps a couple in the far north?

35% is an exceptionally poor result for Le Pen when compared to expectations. It will likely weaken her position within the FN quite a bit.

That's a relief, I know Le Pen was *certain* to lose, but the mind was wondering after last year...

Shush, Richard the official Received Wisdom Line is that FN can't be ignored, highest ever vote for a far right candidate etc etc. The fact that she has had the floor wiped with her, and that Fillon's attempt to mimic her also failed, that she was in fact beaten neither by someone tacking to the right nor playing the populist left card, but by a centrist whose main plank was that, whatever his faults, maybe he has some grip on the real world, is not to be mentioned.

In particular the BBC still seems intent on puffing MLP up, EVEN NOW. Their coverage of this election has been a genuine disgrace.

Has Theresa May offered a state visit for Macron yet?

In particular the BBC still seems intent on puffing MLP up, EVEN NOW. Their coverage of this election has been a genuine disgrace. Pretty much every media outlet which has pushed the "she could win!" line against all reasonable evidence - which is quite a few outlets, including most of the British ones - has shat the bed with this election. I mean I know why the Daily Mail might want to talk her up, but the FT and Guardian have been doing it too!

A remarkable achievement by Macron. Within a year create a new party, fund it, find the foot soldiers and win the Palace. Now to use that momentum for the Legislature elections.
Brexshit negotiations have just got tougher.

And of course we had no idea how French voters would react to a FN candidate making it to a run off.
