A lot of the rhetoric referred to the London left and their cultural and equality agenda such as gay rights. Those things are now largely accepted.

A lot of the rhetoric referred to the London left and their cultural and equality agenda such as gay rights. Those things are now largely accepted. Also public consultation and police accountability to name but two. We also argued for one member one vote in internal party elections, and for direct election of the party leader, both since adopted by the Conservatives. Valuing and promoting community organizations was another. I'm sure I could elaborate and come up with more if I could be bothered. It's 30 years ago now.

Though there's the added irony that a lot of those demands in terms of governance issues etc. have not actually had the desired effect of moving policy making closer to the people.

There is not much point of the other parties putting up candidates, Tooting has enough liberals and immigrants to secure Labour a 30% majority.

where do these people come from carlton's estranged son, who walked out of the family on his 18th birthday and vowed never to speak to his dad again until he modified his sneering metropolitan trendy outlook on life?

I would suggest at least a spark of interest has been put into the Tooting By election thanks to the GREEN Surge in the Lambeth by election. Although it would need a leicester style miracle for the GREENS to win. I would suggest that the weekend before the by election Labour supporters will not be as happy as the GREEN ones and that could spill over into the last week of campaigning.
Could turn a dull formality into a who knows what is that I see in the distance, it is farmer giles' prized Gloustershire Old Spot about to circle the count over head with a banner tied to its tail, "GREENS WINNING HERE"

Though that result was undoubtedly down to internal issues (Lambeth council and local LP) to a large extent.
Even if it wasn't, people here are simply not going to vote Green in large numbers and risk letting the Tories in surely?

Exactly. Weren't the issues specifically local? I think Labour got a deserved shock in the by election but this isn't even in the same borough

The issues were very local, down to ward level.

This kind of pitiful ramping has no place on this forum. I don't know, it's always good for a laugh. And even more if some enthusiastic Greenie goes down to Tooting on the strength of it, then discovers to their surprise that it's not actually very similar to the trendy bits of Lambeth even though it's quite close to it on the map.

Oh dear, have we got a Wolfie Smith style result coming? 6 votes at the Tooting North by election? Won by the Conservative candidate David West. "Flaming yeti!"

What a low profile campaign even here. No comment, no news, no polls and no reason to believe this will be other than a simple and easy Labour victory. Why has this not assumed a higher profile as it was quite marginal last year? Is it just because it was surrounded by the Mayoralty and Referendum?
