I am only leaning to say a Conservative Gain if they pick a good candidate and they run a good campaign. The candidate is very good. There remains no prospect of a by-election gain. Especially as labour have chosen the best possible time to have the by-election. It was definitely in their interests to have it prior to the EU referendum vote (when some in our party won't give a toss about the by-election whatsoever), and they can logically argue as well that it doesn't leave Tooting unrepresented for a long time. Labour will, of course, not be as distracted by the EU referendum debate as some of our lot are, and Tooting is likely to be a pro-remain area anyway. Have changed my mind from 10-19.9% labour majority to 20-29.9% labour majority for the above reasons. And this will not be the fault of our candidate in any way, shape or form.

Let's not forget the suicidal Mayoral campaign.

Could someone elaborate on who Zirwa Javid, Akbar Malik, Zia Samadani and Smiley Smillie are, please? I have never heard of any of these people.
It seems like half the candidates on this list sprang out of nowhere.

Looks like the treasury will make a tidy profit from this by-election. Only Labour and the Conservatives can be certain to retain their deposit here. Hopefully we will too, Lib Dems possibly, UKIP less likely to.

I'm surprised Ankit Love is giving it another go. Somebody told me he borrowed his mayoral deposit on the idea that he would easily get enough vote to save his deposit. However, I add that I'm unsure if this is true or just rumour.

My first thought when seeing that SOPN was wondering to what extent Labour will be helped by the fact their candidate's name is going to be right at the top of the ballot papers (the Conservatives' will be at the bottom).

Being towards the top of the ballot paper helps, although being at the very bottom of a very long ballot paper also helps.

How easy is it to appear on the ballot paper under the names Aaron Aardvark or Zuut Zzzzzer?

How easy is it to appear on the ballot paper under the names Aaron Aardvark or Zuut Zzzzzer? Easy indeed, but having achieved one of those desired positions, assess the gain from re-positioning on ballot to the detriment of losing votes by having a very silly name!

Wasn't Vauxhall the by-election absolutely swimming in Judean People's Fronts vs People's Fronts of Judea Brackets Officials End Brackets rivalries?

Wasn't Vauxhall the by-election absolutely swimming in Judean People's Fronts vs People's Fronts of Judea Brackets Officials End Brackets rivalries? There were some interesting characters - it was the first time the Green Party saved its deposit in a Parliamentary election (and was held on the same day as their 1989 EP election breakthrough) but they had to contend with one Dominic Allen standing as 'The Greens'. When Labour imposed Kate Hoey as candidate and stopped any of the local black candidates being selected, there was a lot of discussion about an independent candidate from the black community. Two turned up - methodist minister Rev Hewie Andrew as 'The People's Candidate', and radical barrister Rudy Narayan as an Independent.

It seems the National Front's feuding also produced two candidates. And there would have been a Continuing SDP candidate as well as a SaLaD but the former withdrew.

When Labour imposed Kate Hoey as candidate ...... Considering what a pain she has proved to be on all sorts of issues, I'm sure there are some regrets - but most of her maverick tendencies appear to have emerged well after her election
