I understand the count was paused to hold 2 minutes silence in memory of Jo Cox... nice touch.

Discrepancy discovered so the bundles are being recounted.

From LabourList live blog:
"12.49: There is a discrepancy in the ballots and the bundles are being recounted. Expect a result now sometime after one o’clock. They are just checking numbers so it should not take too long."

7.25% swing from Conservative to Labour despite decrease in UKIP's share of the vote and the seat being marginal....
Personally glad Greens still came third.
Also rather interesting that for only the second time in British by-election history, two candidates have achieved fewer than 10 votes.

That is a very good Labour result with a swing of over 7% on the figures quoted above.
On our poll the majority decision was correct. I was in the 20-30% bracket and it was nearly at our base position. But no cigar. Cigar for Labour.

Did the BBC News channel even cover the declaration? I happened to switch over to Sky News just in time for the declaration as it was imminent.

I did the same but had a quick look at the BBC News Channel near the end of the declaration and they were showing it. But they may have missed the beginning of it, I don't know.

I honestly don't think the Conservatives have done all that badly, considering the party are six years into government - including by post-2010 standards. The swing Labour need for an overall majority, even if no boundary changes were to take place, is about 8.8%.

In the modern age of multi party elections. Is there many instances where so few parties namely in this case 2 have saved their deposit?

I think you need a powerful telescope to see beyond the first two though, but 3rd is third, frustrating though because we had a good local candidate relatively well known in the local community and yet we achieved just over half the percentage vote we did last year.
