I checked the betting yesterday and Hofer was 1/3 so a bit of an upset. What. A. Tremendous. Shame. I really should have birthdays more often. Early hours of the day before we win Richmond Park, on the day Rovers go top of National League, today the far right lose unexpectedly in Austria. Lovely! You should have two like the Queen.

Is turnout up? Could be higher turnout among the young to stop Hofer? Up around 1.5%, it seems.

Van der Bellen won the day vote 52-48, while Hofer won it 52-48 in the original run. Seems almost all counting areas saw a 1 to 5% swing to Van der Bellen. It's very uniform. Perhaps the same phenomenon we see in France, usually, when an election is rerun due to technicalities, the original winner wins by a bigger margin. I'd guess a mix of both people 'punishing' Hofer for calling an unnecessary election and those who didn't vote the first time but are on the left being alarmed when the original result was so close.

Makes me laugh even if not remotely correct...also same feed pointed out that Farage has failed in 22 years for UKIP and predecessors what Olney achieved in 18 months as a "new" Liberal Democrat member, that is to be elected to the House of Commons.

If the EU has any sense (which I increasingly doubt) Hi. 2curious, what would that sense be? And while i'm at it, whatever it is the UK gubby may be after, wouldn't they have made more progress to date if they had tried to get it my making proposals to amend the existing EU framework? :-)

Though interestingly, not rural areas in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, which seems counter-intuitive, you'd have thought they might have been amongst the more conservative areas. Possibly less exposed to migration, being furthest away from the border with Hungary?

If we don't accept this result, should we start a petition demanding Van Der Bellen can't be confirmed as winner unless he secures 60% of the vote? And take it to an Austrian court so that Van Der Bellen's assumption of power is conditional on approval of the Nationalrat and Bundesrat, and possibly MEPs?

I wonder how much you have to pay for a recount.

far right defeated in contest for figurehead position. And how do you think that will affect their vote for more meaningful contests to come? Still expect Haider to become Chancellor in 2018 with the FPOE on 35% but that is only 8% above their 1999 high watermark so some perspective is required.
