The real reason for it of course is that if the Tories take their seats they would essentially have to reciprocate if they were in control. Now that with a Tory government there's little chance of them taking back control anytime soon Labour has been taken up on their far to clever offer and now have to share power with a party that's probably now going to get even smaller. I always thought that Hastings Labour sometimes overstretched themselves by being too clever by half and this would now seem to be the case! By the way you do realise that the Tories have been taking their seats in Cabinet in Hastings for the last year, so this offer from Labour isn't new nor unprecedented that the Tories take it up.

I wasn't aware of that. The way people were mentioning it it was as if they were taking up their seats for the first time this year. Still silly politics from Labour though, the Tories in Hastings, being a generally rubbish campaigning outfit (despite the GE result which, like here, would have more to do with the Central Office machine) will just lose more seats and become more irrelevant as this parliament goes on but Labour are stuck with sharing power with them however small they get. The real litmus test is if UKIP get a few seats and if Labour will be so generous with them, if the leadership were minded to be that would create real splits in the local party.

Vacancy in Long Ditton ward of Elmbridge Borough Council following resignation today of Cllr Toni Izard (LibDem). Last month the LibDem incumbent, and outgoing Mayor, held by 49 votes over the Conservatives. Usually a reasonably safe LD ward but won by the Conservatives in 2008 Prior to 2008, it had been a safe LD seat since 1990. But since the surprise Cons gain in 2008, LD majorities have been very small - except when one particular Cllr is up (she got majority of 675 in 2010 and 503 in 2014). But in 2011 majority was 43, in 2012 it was 28 and this year 49. (The resigned Cllr was elected in 2012 when she gained the Cons seat.)
