There have over the years been many by-elections held in the week before Christmas. In particular, I think there was one in East Herts on 23rd December 2010 when an Independent retained a seat, although I cannot find the details of the result. From my archives: SAWBRIDGEWORTH (23.12.10) Resignation of Nigel Clark (Ind). Eric Buckmaster Ind 441 William Mortimer C 343 Peter Mitchell Lab 99 Michael Shaw LD 95 The 1954 Inverness by election was held on the 21st of December. I'm pretty sure this is the "closest to Christmas" parliamentary by election since the Second World War.

Aylesbury Vale holding a by-election two days before Christmas? Can anyone tell me what the record low for a local by-election turnout is (because I think we may have a challenger for that title)? Great. Guess what I'm doing on Dec 23rd?

In May this year he was one of the three Conservatives elected.

Candidates for Kinson South, Bournemouth UA: Beryl BAXTER (Labour Party) Geoffrey DARNTON (Green Party) Philip DAVENPORT (Bournemouth Independent Alliance) Norman David DECENT (Conservative Party Candidate) Kevin DIXON (Patria) Phil DUNN (Liberal Democrats) Duane William FARR (UKIP) Carla Christina Rachel GREGORY-MAY (Green Party) Roger George MARLEY (Conservative Party Candidate) Gill PARDY (Liberal Democrats) Mel SEMPLE (Labour Party) Roger Alexander WEST (Bournemouth Independent Alliance). Interesting that UKIP are only standing one candidate in a ward which they topped in May. Do they have an 'arrangement'with Patria? Maybe peterl can explain. I doubt UKIP would go anywhere near or do a deal with Patria. I assume UKIP in Bournemouth felt putting up two candidates may mean they would pick up neither seat due to all those who may ticket split would split between both candidates. I would have still put up candidates for both vacancies, now they may miss out on winning both seats!

Gogarth may be relatively sane.
By Welsh standards.

The No Description in Ryedale on 17 December is a Lib Dem - his leaflets are blaming a 'technical issue' for the cock up.

Probably a Conservative Hold, though the Independent came within a couple of percentage points of getting the second seat last time and could scrape through. It will be interesting to see if the Liberals manage to break out of their Pickering stronghold, they don't appear to have stood south of the river before.

I think the Liberal candidate is actually from Pickering, which would tie in with that being their stronghold.
Whilst leafleting up there I've seen material from the Liberals, the No Description/LD and Yorkshire First. Nothing from the Conservative or the independent (who I believe used to be a Conservative County Councillor).
Does feel like a Conservative hold, though.
