So is the SNP, it is not always unconducive to electoral success as we have just seen.....

I was in Madrid for the week running up to the election. It was a lesson in not taking poster counts too seriously. The PSOE had by far the most with PP second and Ahora way back.

The Spanish Socialist party has regained second place over Podemos in the last few months: I think recent events in Greece largely explain the fall in support for Podemos - many Spanish voters must be looking at what has happened with Syriza and getting cold feet. This is of course one of the reasons why the Germans and their allies were so ruthless in utterly humiliating Greece. If SYRIZA has been seen to win a better deal it would have been massive boost for the radical left in numerous other countries.

If only the Greeks themselves could see this: Syriza are still getting whopping great opinion poll leads. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Greek_legislative_election

I have a feeling the PP will do better than predicted. I suspect, Crosby-style, they will crush Ciudadanos and the centrist elements of the PS with the fear of Podemos and probably be in a strong position to lead the next Government. The only issue would be allies - apart from C's it's hard to see any significant allies - the Catalans certainly won't touch the PP now.

To those who might not immediately realise, "Socialist Workers Party" is otherwise known as the (rather moderate) PSOE - ie not to be confused with our own

All the centre-right parties are tainted by regionalism or overt RC religiosity, so I shall be a minor party I don't know or a no vote.

I hadn't noticed this previously. What a bizarre date to hold a general election. This has also just alerted me to the fact that this date will be my brother's fiftieth birthday which I hadn't realised until now

In Malaga for the weekend, lots of PSOE posters, but Podemos had street stalls... blasting out 'Imagine' as well as 'Les Mis' ....

At least one former Labour MP had that somewhat dubious past claim to fame......

Tony Clarke, ex-Northampton South (and no longer Labour, of course) He acknowledged it when an MP IIRC.

Apparently the youth who punched Rajoy is both a football hooligan and an extreme leftist (quite an unusual combination, I would have thought). Football can be quite political in Spain but I'd not have thought so in Galicia (not for extreme left ones anyway, I'd associate it with the extreme right there).

I don't know much about any political side to the Galician clubs: Deportivo la Coruna and Celta Vigo. This is the celtic fringe of Spain so we might expect it to be something like Brittany in cultural terms.
