My own notional calculation for Clacton on the 2013 results puts UKIP in second place on 29%, 5% behind the Conservatives, but that's likely to be inaccurate, given that I had to use the proportional method for most of the parties rather than the 2012 results.

I'm not sure how support broke down in Tendring Rural East, but I know that in Brightlingsea Lib Dem support will have been heavily concentrated in Alresford.

How many of these have you been to? It's occurred to me before to use my Spanish address to get an interrail pass for the UK. Maybe I shall. My constituency. I know every one of them. I have been through all of them on trains and stood on the platforms of at least half. I don't think Beauly is in it though? It is a town in Invernessshire and near the Ross border Looking at that unparalleled list of stations there are many distinct oddities. Plockton (Venue for Hamish Macbeth) is at the top of the hill to the township and has a nice cafe mainly supported by pupils from the adjacent High School which takes weekly borders because of the great distances. Next is Duncraig only approached by a half mile private rutted track through the estate of Duncraig House which spawned a TV documentary series, and sweeping past their front door. Stromeferry used to be the original terminus and is approached by a very steep hill with sign 'Strome Ferry No Ferry'. Achnashellach which serves three houses and a hotel with no public road to it, only foot access on start of very long footpath but better direct access from hotel. And re-opened Beauly with such a short platform is can only be accessed from one door in one carriage. It will be a wrench to leave the finest part of Britain.

Louise Mensch: "What a self-indulgent, toys out of the pram, whiny Labour-supporting tosser Carswell is. Doubt Clacton will be impressed" erm, she really tweed it! Why do we keep hearing from and about this gormless stupid self-seeking vacuous waste of space? Why isn't she in the US of A where she promised to go to be with the new Mr Bagshawe? An interval of silence is desirable......for about 80-years! I agree with Carlton.

Lord is county councillor for Brightlingsea (which includes one ward of the Clacton seat) and UKIP group leader on the county council. Selected earlier this August and not what I would describe as a top-tier recruit. I assume some top-tier flouncing may be the outcome?

Doesn't that mean that Carswell could be the candidate for the by-election but Lord is still the candidate for the GE?

I would've thought there would be an open primary to select the UKIP candidate, as advocated in The Plan...

No, he has I believe made a terrible decision (the joining UKIP bit more than the leaving the tories) and lumped himself with profoundly illiberal folk, but an honourable one and he has been a gentleman about calling the by-election. We must defeat him and defeat him fair and square. Nothing else will do. This is a crunch moment for this government. But Carswell is not particularly socially liberal He is an economic liberal and a libertarian, but not a cultural liberal. So he may find UKIP a reasonable place for him - and his presence will increase the libertarian position in the party It will also suggest that there is no place in UKIP for defectors from the left who really do have nothing in common with Carswell Not at all - it may be Mr Carswell who finds the party isn't what he expected it to be... We're a broad church and he will find some that agree with him, some that will disagree, and many that find comfort in the middle...

Basically, if Carswell wins the byelection he'll be the GE candidate. If he loses Roger Lord might stand a chance - if he doesn't make a cock of himself in the meantime...

But will Carswell defecting make it more or less likely that UKIP could attract people from the left? I would suggest less - he is so clearly anti-Labour and associated with the libertarian Right I'm not sure who of Labour's small number of anti's would be likely to jump, as they tend to be either on the far left or mavericks who wouldn't fit into any party

UKIP have certainly benefited from a lack of definition (beyond opposition to certain things). But if they want to thrive over the long term maybe they need to define themselves in a clearer way, even at the cost of alienating some groups of voters? All idle speculation, mind.

Well there are some policy statements starting to emerge... I guess that might help give people some idea of where we have a focus...

Well there are some policy statements starting to emerge... I guess that might help give people some idea of where we have a focus... Yes but you do realise that if Carswell is elected almost everything that he utters about everything will be taken by some people to be UKIP policy.
