Labour had a PPC selected for Clacton: Tim Young, leader of Colchester Labour Group.
I guess that the NEC would confirm him for the by-election unless he's a mad basket case.

Thanks, so it's only seven. Perhaps one of our rail enthusiasts can provide a list of which non Met and non London seats have the most railway stations.

There are ridiculous sounding suggestions that the Chancellor may refuse to appoint him to the Manor of Northstead. Which would be an interesting precedent. That would backfire also. Isn't there precedent in this not being needed anyway when Gerry Adams refused the post when he resigned as MP in 2011?

Carswell was the only Tory MP openly supporting proportional representation AFAIK.

Louise Mensch: "What a self-indulgent, toys out of the pram, whiny Labour-supporting tosser Carswell is. Doubt Clacton will be impressed"
erm, she really tweeted it!

The rules have changed on when elections are held after the writ. Newark was the first one but I guess it depends on when the writ is moved for the timescale to begin. 9th of October if the writ is moved on Monday.

The old Harwich seat would have been up there - it wouldn't have had Weeley but it had Dovercourt, Harwich Town and Harwich International.

How many of these have you been to? In terms of travel along the line, I've been along all of the West Highland Line, all of the Far North Line within the constituency, and the Kyle Line between Kyle of Lochalsh and Plockton. In terms of stations I've actually boarded/alighted at, only Fort William, Mallaig, Kyle of Lochalsh, Plockton and Dingwall.

Isn't there precedent in this not being needed anyway when Gerry Adams refused the post when he resigned as MP in 2011? Adams was definitely appointed Steward of the Manor of Northstead. He had requested to resign his seat and that was the way, so it was too late to refuse the post.
