FWIW, serial UKIP talker-upper Matthew Goodwin of Nottingham University thinks "Carswell will win hands down".

There are ridiculous sounding suggestions that the Chancellor may refuse to appoint him to the Manor of Northstead. Which would be an interesting precedent. That would backfire also. I don't know who is making this suggestion but it is indeed ridiculous and would never happen. One or two people on the Tory Taliban wing of the party.

Louise Mensch: "What a self-indulgent, toys out of the pram, whiny Labour-supporting tosser Carswell is. Doubt Clacton will be impressed" erm, she really tweed it! Why do we keep hearing from and about this gormless stupid self-seeking vacuous waste of space? Why isn't she in the US of A where she promised to go to be with the new Mr Bagshawe? An interval of silence is desirable......for about 80-years!

It's occurred to me before to use my Spanish address to get an interrail pass for the UK. Maybe I shall. My constituency. I know every one of them. I have been through all of them on trains and stood on the platforms of at least half. I don't think Beauly is in it though? It is a town in Invernessshire and near the Ross border

The prospective Clerk fulfils all the requirements of the role afterall.

Thanks. Hearing speculation that Coalition MPs will vote down the writ. That would be spectacularly stupid if done. To be honest, if I was a Tory (or Labour / Lib Dem), tactically I'd probably be minded to prevent the byelection if I could. A moment's bad news for refusing it that will be so arcane 90% of people will switch off as soon as they hear it against the prospect of giving UKIP a game-changing byelection win? no brainer really.

To be honest, fighting the by-election is surely in the Coalition parties' best interests? If the Conservatives can beat UKIP it doesn't just stop the UKIP bandwagon, it is essentially delivering a bunker-buster missile to the party. It kills any hope of more defections, and will gut UKIP activists. For the LibDems a by-election works for them - a fight between the right, and the prospect of a Conservative defeat which will help them hold their own seats against the Conservatives.

Labour had a PPC selected for Clacton: Tim Young, leader of Colchester Labour Group. I guess that the NEC would confirm him for the by-election unless he's a mad basket case. He has a minor criminal conviction for dangerous driving: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-20454045

The prospective Clerk fulfils all the requirements of the role afterall. I fulfil almost none of the requirements of the role of Clerk but can reaffirm that the suggestion is absurd and will never happen.

No, he has I believe made a terrible decision (the joining UKIP bit more than the leaving the tories) and lumped himself with profoundly illiberal folk, but an honourable one and he has been a gentleman about calling the by-election. We must defeat him and defeat him fair and square. Nothing else will do. This is a crunch moment for this government. But Carswell is not particularly socially liberal He is an economic liberal and a libertarian, but not a cultural liberal. So he may find UKIP a reasonable place for him - and his presence will increase the libertarian position in the party It will also suggest that there is no place in UKIP for defectors from the left who really do have nothing in common with Carswell

Political Bookie is quoting UKIP at 1/3, Tories 5/2, Labour 10/1 Labour were 14/1 with Paddy Power which I think was much too high.

The odds don't rely upon anything more than not terribly informed guesswork. I'd not be inclined to ascribe much credence to them for at least a couple of weeks.

Apparently . Roger Lord the already selected UKIP candidate for Clacton has said that he will not stand down in favour of Douglas Carswell .

Apparently . Roger Lord the already selected UKIP candidate for Clacton has said that he will not stand down in favour of Douglas Carswell . Roger Lord won't have a say in the matter. UKIP rules specify that for parliamentary by elections the NEC are responsible for selecting a candidate. In the past they have often allowed the local party to choose a candidate and then simply endorsed their decision but there is absolutely no way that anything like that will happen here.

Lord is county councillor for Brightlingsea (which includes one ward of the Clacton seat) and UKIP group leader on the county council. Selected earlier this August and not what I would describe as a top-tier recruit.

Selected earlier this August and not what I would describe as a top-tier recruit. It's possible the local UKIP branch selected a candidate without informing national party headquarters. Otherwise you'd have expected Farage to have made some comment today such as "we would like to kindly ask the current candidate to step aside in these special circumstances".
