But, seriously now, congratulations Kippers: whatever happens next, this is your day. Try not to be total cunts about it though (and for your own sake rather than anyone else's).

I note that Farage has claimed that UKIP are the only truly national party. So... not only are they stealing the LibDem's old function and rather more of their former voters than appears to be entirely polite to mention, but they're also stealing their lines.

Priti Patel at the count. I wonder if she's ever allowed to go anywhere without at least three Central Office minders to stop UKIP people trying to persuade her. She was pretty strongly attacking UKIP on the BBC, though only with the bog standard rubbish, so I don't think she's going anywhere this side of the election.

Douglas Carswell got 21,113 votes, which is the biggest number of votes for any candidate in a parliamentary by-election since 1997.

Carswell claiming half his vote came from Labour according to Sky. Fairly sure that Labour will have a better result than that. It wasn't mathematically possible for half his vote to have come from Labour as things turned out of course and if that had happened it would have required Carswell to have done much worse than he did and than was expected. However it is worth noting perhaps that proportonally the fall in the Labour vote, both numerically and in percentage terms was greater than that of the Tories.

In the event of Carswell just managing to break 60% (rather than falling fractionally short, as happened) UKIP would have set a new byelection swing record - as it was the Tory-UKIP move was 44.1%, just a hairsbreadth short of the Labour-Liberal swing in Bermondsey 1983.
Despite the poor Labour result here, Inverclyde 2011 remains the only GB contest not to show a Tory-Lab swing since the GE.

But UKIP didn't stand a candidate against Carswell in 2010 so no such 'swing' can be calculated.

I think the stuff he believes in he believes in too strongly to be their leader - if they want to be appealing to Labour voters as well. He is a Thatcherite and won't change.
