If he can cheerfully dump his electors, cause a by-election and endorse the LibDems in a hissy fit of pique we are well shot of him.

The Lib Dem candidate is, in fairness, not a bad chap and was unlucky not to win the seat last year.

My point about Lord was not intended to be a back-handed attack on LibDems, still less on their candidate. It is just that the LibDem stance generally on the EU, Immigration and social conservatism is quite a way from that of UKIP and he should not have found that movement so easy.

It's possible in this case that his motivation stems from local factors- certainly Gary is about as un UKIP as you can get!

Quick alert: there's a televised debate on BBC 1 in the Eastern region starting in five minutes. Said to be the only debate Douglas Carswell has agreed to participate in.

Quick alert: there's a televised debate on BBC 1 in the Eastern region starting in five minutes. Said to be the only debate Douglas Carswell has agreed to participate in. Carswell started off poorly but got better. The line about knowing many of the young unnemployed by name was actually believable and if that is true it explains why the bookies are almost refusing to offer odds on him failing. Also good on houses. Not very convincing on streetlights and got tripped up badly by Tim Young on health privatisation. Also got a lot of stick for fighting the election and wasting money. Tim Young was effective in bursts, but tended to get shouty. He seemed to directly lie when he was reading from Carswell's The Plan (saying that Carswell wanted people to spend their own money on doctors rather than public money following the patient), although I doubt it'll get picked up. Probably his best intervention. Gile Waitling is a bumbler who gives the impression of a decent man overpromoted, only clever thing he seemed to do was managing to get across the impression that he was a local man angle until I was sick of it - which is probably just about enough for someone who wastes less of their life on politics. The Green (Chris Southall?) was incoherent although I remember him trying to get his say on immigration even when it was clear that the debate was carefully staying away from immigration (having reread what I wrote, that perhaps shows some bias). I didn't really pay much attention to the Liberal who might as well have had a neon sign saying "I don't come from round here".

If he can cheerfully dump his electors, cause a by-election and endorse the LibDems in a hissy fit of pique we are well shot of him. In the New Statesman he was hinting heavily that he was ready to defect back to the Tories and be their candidate against Carswell. Dan Hodges was a big fan for a while (once he was ex-UKIP of course).

That was a revealingly terrible section. The highlight was Allegra Stratton claiming that Jaywick is south of Clacton. I think she may have confused it with the North Sea. And for Christ's sake, couldn't at least one journalist go somewhere other than Jaywick? It'd be nice if the media's consistent line on Clacton wasn't, "It's a bit grim, isn't it?", but even if they must keep ramming that point home there are other places they could go. Poverty tourism at its worst. And it's not as if Jaywick is typical of the seat in any case.

'Jaywick' isn't even typical of Jaywick. But finding the other deprived parts of Clacton might require some actual research, and journalists can't be wasting time on that...

Waitling's Carswell's man in the Association and he's not so much out of his depth as pulling his punches? Now that's it, if there's one rule about internet posting that is if you're making up your own conspiracy theories it's time for bed.

Looking at it with a very cynical eye, I wouldn't be surprised if the Tories had waited until eve of poll, to drop what they consider to be this gem...

But it's not a gem. It's the sort of thing nobody is very surprised about a defector doing, and there are plenty of worse things they could say about Carswell.

It would be far too late to make an impact. My own feeling is that some, looking at how the accusations of betrayal have put Reckless on the defensive, decided to try and get a similar momentum going against Carswell. But it should have been done at the beginning of the campaign.

They could have tried to hit him on expenses, or how much time he spends in the constituency, or half a dozen other issues. But I think those with access to dirt would rather not put targets on their backs for next year's all-ups.
