It looks like 9 by-elections during the month:
- 1 on 7th January (a Tuesday) - 2 on 9th January - 1 on 16th January - 2 on 23rd January - 3 on 30th January
4 are in District Councils, 3 having the last election in 2011 (every 4 years) with the fourth in 2012 (every 2 years in the particular ward) 2 are for Metropolitan Councils and 1 in a Unitary Authority where the last elections were in 2012 2 in Scotland where the last elections were also in 2012
Conservatives are defending 5 seats - 2 following the death of the previous councillor, 2 resignations and 1 disqualification for non-attendance Labour are defending 3 seats - 2 deaths and a resignation Independent defends 1 seat following a resignation
With all the nominations now declared: Conservatives are defending all 9 seats, Labour 8, UKIP 7, Lib Dems 5 and Greens 3 seats Independents have 3 candidates contesting 2 seats, SNP 2 whilst English Democrats and TUSAC are each contesting 1 seat - a total of 39 candidates.
Predictions on this thread by 9.00 am on day of election.

The relevant thread on the local by-elections board here is usually a good starting point - greatkingrat provides candidates and past results and David Ashforth provides links to ward maps and other statistics, for which both deserve high praise.

12 entries this week with Joe making a maiden appearance whilst Casual Observer and David Boothroyd make a welcome return although there is no Andrew Teale.
PhilDav's prediction is Lab 51, Green 17.5, UKIP 15.5, Con 12.5, ED 2 and TUSAC 1.5.
100% Labour hold with only Mark Senior and Carlton43 predicting a lower Labour share than in May 2012.
Note there is no Lib Dem candidate although the party won this seat in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
