..., ruled in Feb 2014 that the 3% entry hurdle violated the constitution as it stopped parties from getting a fair hearing. This ruling came into effect immediately and would apply to the European elections in May. It is interesting that that was the specific reason given. Does that mean that the 5% threshold has also been abolished for Parliamentary elections? It would be logical to keep a threshold for the national parliament but not the European Parliament because the EP is not concerned with building a viable majority coalition government in the same way that the Bundestag is.

No, the 5% Hürde has not been removed for the Bundestag, yet, there is a court case by the NPD (surprise, surprise) for this to be removed. If it is, I suspect that the country will cease to be a national constituency but become land-based constituencies. This has not been done before because of, well, Bayern.

On one hand, it would be removing the very thing (alongside the constructive vote of no confidence) that makes the Bundesrepublik's system superior to the Weimar system. On the other hand, it does make it hard to challenge the incumbent parties. That said, Germany could do without such luminaries as the NPD, Republikaner, various Leftist groups, the Pirates, and the pointless Freie Waehler.

* Have applied for membership + Have been linked with EGP but no confirmed membership as yet. ~ Membership agreed post-election So the SPD had quite a good election, AfD made a big breakthrough, almost coming 4th and German has 6 parties in the parliament not attached to any grouping yet, of which the NPD will be considered beyond the pale by everyone, I can't imagine die partei joining with anyone either. AfD have applied to ECR. Any ideas if the any of the others might find a group?

AfD to ECR. NPD and Die Partei the only non-aligned German MEPs. Would expect it to stay as such.
