It is a reasonable observation that the Green Party have become a convenient pis aller for many of those left-wingers who find the post-2020 Labour Party unpalatable or who have been expelled from Labour. This is particularly so where the local Green Party was not large to start with, and the number of Labour defectors have overwhelmed them - and Wirral would be one very good example. The Green party have done well locally - particularly the Labour party in Wirral, including some council problems. I know one councillor who left Labour - she is on the left, but joined at least five years ago. Certainly I'd vote for her, rather than Alison McGovern MP! Haven't Wirral Labour run the show since 2012? Ructions and voter fatigue aren't surprising (at least in that context). Cf. Sefton.

That may well be the case - but the Greens have taken the Lib Dem playbook adapted (and possibly improved it) accordingly, so even if the party is 'overwhelmed' by Labour defectors they're playing by Lib Dem rules - which is a very different (and less ideological) beast.

Exactly. The Lib Dems are a Home Counties protest party now. That realignment began in 2017 and it was in full swing in 2019 and came home to the roost for the Tories in 2024. In many areas of the inner cities, especially, the Greens are now what the Lib Dems were in the 2000s. Let's see if it lasts.

The Falkirk byelection report in The Herald give no figures at all other than the turnout. It just says it was "close run". The Falkirk Herald says that the runner-up was "pipped at the post". Is a majority of 111 "pipped"? I wonder whether the journalist even saw or heard the final result at all, but just guessed it was close. The final figures should be included in the Declaration.

I think being in the lead up to the final tranfer stage and then being overtaken would reasonably well fit the definition of “pipped at the post”
