No it isn't. no ordinary voter will notice and if they do give a stuff. I respectfully disagree to both points.

Thank you very much (and please stand down on this edgbaston ). So it is all bollocks about a nonentity. Sorry I asked. I agree she’s a non-entity but “former Labour MP backs/joins Greens” is still a damn good endorsement in my book. Clare Short was not just a run-of-the-mill, lobby fodder, identikit MP either, and when you consider the reasons Labour lost the old Bristol West seat in 2005...

I think they’re trying to create permission structures for tribal labour voters who might be impressed by Carla Denyer’s charisma That uses ordinary words and appears to be perfectly well written, but I have no idea what it means and introduces another person I have not heard of. Permission structures are basically a way to allow a person who has been persuaded of one thing to let go of their tribal inhibitions. So when you voted for Blair in 97 despite your long standing Tory activism there were lots of things in your life that allowed you to do that rather than staying with your well established Conservative self identity. It wasn't just about being persuaded that a Labour government wasn't so bad, you needed to be jolted into doing that. Permission structures is one of the few social sciences idea that is actually useful in politics

Oh. Why put some weight on a one term MP from West Yorkshire? Objectively many won't know who she is here.

Permission structures is one of the few social sciences idea that is actually useful in politics I understand the precept but at the time it did not apply in any way to me in 1997. I had escaped the day job on rather good terms at 50. Spent a year in pubs with the 'afternoon crowd', walked hundreds of miles of the east coast, disused railways and canal towpaths, travelled all over France and much of Italy, gone to art school for 3-years, and set up an artists drinking and free love commune. I had well and truly dropped out of all previous associations and connections apart from close family. Blair was an easy and natural choice. I didn't need facilitation or validation. I can see that rather more staid and formal people than me might need such a push. But surely this one is so far removed from conviction and utility as to be an absurdity?

We were talking about Thelma Walker. Oh. Why put some weight on a one term MP from West Yorkshire? Objectively many won't know who she is here. To repeat. She’s a former Labour MP who is now backing/a member of the Greens. That’s an endorsement plus the others (which includes Short) if I was mulling voting Green but thinking ‘why bother they’re small what’s the point etc) a list of endorsements like this including two ex-Labour MPs is powerful. The leaflet isn’t just about her, she is a very small part of it.

A one-term, party hack, from West Riding Yorkshire, who is sufficiently batty to have supported a mad outfit in a by-election, is not worth a wet paper bag in Bristol.

If it was a former Bristol MP like Doug Naysmith or Dawn Primarilo then fine, but she was an MP for Holmfirth, West Yorkshire for god's sake.

It really isn't a big deal and all the person who drew up the leaflet was trying to do was show that there were a lot of people supporting the Greens and it was ok for people who might vote Labour to do so. Seeing they were able to get a quote from a former Labour MP they thought it couldn't hurt to put it on the leaflet, and I would wager spent less time thinking about the characteristics of Thelma Walker than people have here. Obviously someone local would've been better but there wasn't anyone and there are enough people described as being from Bristol on the leaflet.

It’s not as bad as that awful letter from ‘Ian Austin: Former Labour MP for Dudley’ that was sent to marginal Labour constituencies at the last election.

It would add to it if she had any national profile, but being a Labour MP is part of the permission mechanism.

You might want Labour to win this as the less far left option, but it's moonshine to think this ex Labour MP will make an iota of difference.
