She's v close to the hated Corbyn, they were once an item and have had parallel political careers, that's why they're getting rid of, inter alia. But she'll be elevated to the Lords as a life peer along with Harriet. She was probably dropped hints she would be denied this if she stood as an Independent. And sothey'll join Keir's best friend Ayesha Hazarika. Whilst I'm on this I think Starmer will waste no time in handing Bercow a peerage. No chance Bercow gets a peerage. "The respondent’s conduct was so serious that, had he still been a Member of Parliament, we would have determined that he should be expelled by resolution of the House. As it is, we recommend that he should never be permitted a pass to the Parliamentary estate." In this case, Johnson did the right thing refusing him a peerage (although possibly for the wrong reasons).

The wing now in charge of Labour has found mind bogglingly enterprising solutions to tacky issues since 2016. They ain't gonna stop now.

I was thinking about her getting a Frank Field's type of result rather than a Chris Leslie's. But still quite far behind. Why would she not perform as well as the likes of Dave Nellist - Dick Taverne - Eddie Milne? For the same reason the vast majority of sitting MPs that try to stand as independents never get close to winning?

Abbott is at least as well known as those I listed. Another example is the Tory to Ukip defector who held on to Clacton in 2015. SDP defectors such as David Owen and John Cartwright also come to mind.

Bercow remains suspended from the Labour Party AFAIK because of allegations of bullying against him. I think it highly unlikely he'll be given a peerage unless & until the allegations are cleared up in his favour

Peter Law did it in Wales in 2005. Resigned from Labour, then stood as an Independent in GE2005 and won by 9000 votes

The likes of Dominic Grieve and Frank Field were pretty well known at the last election I accept Corbyn having the profile as a former leader could swing that but I think you’re overestimating the possibilities just because it’s another left wing rebel type

The reason why John Cartwright and Rosie Barnes almost held their seats in Woolwich and Greenwich in 1992 was because they were not opposed by Liberal Democrat candidates. The fact that they stood as "Social Democrat" candidates means that it was, in effect, a small local continuation of the Liberal/SDP Alliance of 1983 & 1987. Thus it becomes a bit meaningless if we try to argue the distinction between whether they were actually "Independent" candidates, or candidates for the continuing Social Democratic "Party". As far as I know, they didn't use either the word "Independent" or "Party" alongside their descriptions as "Social Democrat".

Latest twist is Starmer says Abbott not been barred. And Sadiq K says Abbott could still be a Lab PPC.
Obviously imo Labour reversing following all the hullabaloo on the TV, radio and social media - with even the Tories getting involved. Tory chairman has written a letter about the crisis, getting v close to accusing Starmer of dishonesty

It's noticeable that Abbott has chosen to draw attention to 'stories' about her being barred rather than claiming with a source or a letter that she's been told that directly. I'd assume that there is a formal process of selection and that Starmer is correct in saying that she hasn't (perhaps as yet) been deselected. No doubt there have been some nudges and some press briefings (I'd assume from a number of sources including herself).
I welcome her statement that she will be campaigning for the return of a Labour government. I assume that that applies in all circumstances not just in the event of her being chosen as the candidate.

It's possible that she was never barred. That you believed lies. Diane Abbott nor Labour actually said she had been.
But then some of the left wing of Labour thought would prefer the Conservatives to get back in than Starmer. Not saying that is you.

She might do more damage to Starmer by making herself available to Broadcasters right up to polling day. I am sure they will be interested in what she has to say. But of course, far far more damage to herself and her credibility, insofar as she has any to start with.

So she's been subject to an internal disciplinary enquiry which has now concluded. She complied with its recommendations. She has had the Labour whip restored. On what basis can she be excluded as a candidate? Is there a legal avenue she might be able to explore? Oh dear! really!! Is that your considered and mature socialist response? Splitter. And there is always a legal avenue that can be explored if one has the money and the time to behave foolishly.

Anyone seeking legal redress in order to force a party to make them their official candidate most certainly does not have time on their side.
But I can't see it coming to that in this instance.

I'm reminded of Howard Flight back in 2005. I thought it terribly unfair but if you embarrass the party, the party has the right to pull you as a candidate and Abbot has been a serious embarrassment to Labour for a long time now.

From a forum protection point of view can be please be careful about suggesting racist motives and make sure there’s evidence of it if doing so, particularly when it references individuals ie Starmer I think this is a bad call I'm quite happy Abbott is going and don't think Starmer is racist, here But being able to call into question the motives of any frontline politician should be fair game. This sort of thing tends to fall into the realm of Michael Meacher suing for being called Middle Class, it gets laughed out of court and politicians avoid it. I can understand the caution with allegations about specific conduct or lesser ranking politicians. But the MOTIVES of front line politicians should be fair game. It's quite a chilling precedent.

At the moment, if Diane Abbott is re-elected as a Labour MP, she will be the longest serving Labour MP in the new Parliament.
(If she doesn't. then that title will be held jointly by Clive Betts and Angela Eagle, should they be re-elected)

Her language at the meeting in front of Hackney Town Hall yesterday, attended by nearly a thousand, suggests she will stand as an Independent if new Labour's high command do finish her off.
She looked well. Did not look like a 70 yr old more like a woman in her mid 40s. I agree with others here, hard to see her winning as an Independent, more than 20% seems our of reach.
