Aren't they very often people who have fallen out within the Labour Party and therefore not that right wing?

Aren't they very often people who have fallen out within the Labour Party and therefore not that right wing? Being in the Labour Party and being right wing aren't mutually exclusive, you know. Particularly since the New Labour project turned them from a left-wing party into a centrist one.

Some are the remnants of the old Progressive or Ratepayers groups which is how many Tories stood for election in the hope of beating Labour.

Yes, I wasn't sure whether the South Shields ones were in this category or not. Probably personality clashes. Not sure when the Progressives disappeared...

I have seen a lot of opportunists join the SNP over the last few years and have a feeling they will ditch the Nats when it suits them, will it be the same with these guys that are joining UKIP.

Wow - when one presumption is blown out of the water just jump to another ready-made stand by presumption! I suppose once you find out it's not personality clashes, it'll be 'probably facing deselection' even if they were independents!

Oh I'm just very sceptical about people who leave the party they were elected to represent. If their party has determinedly changed direction then fine but it's very rarely got those reasons which is why so many directors work their way through a sequence of affiliations. In any case Independents can't claim to be independent unless they sure exactly that - no alliances.
At least South Shields now has a right wing opposition party not just a lone councillor!

Oh - have Labour gone into opposition then? How odd!

I understand from Twitter that Cllr Rod Scott from Merton has now gone from independent to UKIP (former Tory)

Doubtful. The Nats looked like the obvious national party of government in Scotland for a brief window, and may yet still be. Even at their most organised, UKIP don't even look like a plausible council administration anywhere.

ITV can't even get their headline right - they weren't Tories, at least not recently, I don't know about ever.

There's a definite pattern here - prior to the elections in May UKIP were picking up a lot of defectors straight from (mainly) the Conservatives, more recently they seem to have attracted quite a number who have already gone independant - it almost feels like it could be targetted recruitment...

Quite. It's probably guaranteed that nobody else from Cheshire East will be joining UKIP!
