I understand from Twitter that Cllr Rod Scott from Merton has now gone from independent to UKIP (former Tory) His wife is still sitting as an independent (former Tory) though.

I'm sure Linda Scott's defection is being lined up for another week, with maybe Chris Edge then to folllow a few weeks later. Opportunity to get a bit of publicity for themselves by having individual defections, it is all a bit of a publicity charade though does have its entertainment value.

Out of curiosity , if he has only been in Worthing for a short time and a councillor there only since 2010 , how did he become mayor in 2012 ? I thought becoming mayor was at least part a reward/recognition for long service to the town .

Essentially it boils down to this: no other Tory wanted to take the role on, and the Tory leadership refused to have a LibDem Mayor in 2012/13 because that would have meant the new pool being opened by a LibDem. I spent quite a while trying to persuade Graham Fabes (who was still a Tory at the time) that he would make a good mayor (he would have), and that both sides would have accepted him (I knew this, because I'd asked both sides!) but he wouldn't do it. I think he'd - Charles James that is - been town mayor wherever he was in East Sussex, so they felt he had experience of the role. I also think his wife was quite keen...

I have ceased to be surprised at the goings-on in the Banana Republic of Harrow. The story, if true, is hilarious.

Piers Merchant, Rod Richards, Neil Hamilton. They don't half pick 'em.

Rod Richards is positively sane compared to their current Welsh representative John Tufton......
