The main centre-right to left opposition parties have now officially come together to announce their desire to form a government with Donald Tusk at its head. The coalition will have a clear majority in the Sejm (and the much weaker senate), but not one sufficient enough to overrule the president's veto.
Duda will meet PiS and KO today and the other opposition parties tomorrow for discussions. He has the power to pick the initial PM candidate of course.

Duda has consulted with the parties and is expected to make a speech today and those consultations. Though it's unlikely he'll announce his candidate today.
I think the difficulty for Tusk in the coming few years is really going to be dependent on what Duda wants. He's term-limited in 2025 so has two options if he wants to stay in active politics. And, at just 51, that seems likely. 1) Try to get an important role in a international organization. For that he'll need both the government's support and to look statesmanlike. That means, broadly, allowing Tusk to make significant reforms and de facto supporting him. 2) Try to replace Kaczynski as leader of PiS and lead the party into the next general election (Kaczynski is already 74 and has suffered from health issues recently). In that case, he'll need to pander to the right by being a obstinate and difficult as possible.
Tusk in Brussels today.

PiS complaining about the EU again. One final hurrah before the grand coalition comes to power?
Though, to be fair, I think it's one thing for Tusk to visit Brussels and meet with VdL. It's another thing for her to essentially endorse Tusk as PM.

VdL can do math and recognise reality, instead of entertaining the fiction that PiS will manage to convince 40+MPs to defect. PiS still holds the presidency. The President gets a pick, if the Diet doesn't like the pick, they get to impose their own on the President. 1st proposal: the presidentproposes someone, Diet needs to approve by a majority. 2nd proposal: the Diet chooses to elect someone (by majority). If both fail during the delays in Constitution: new elections.

I’m not talking about the presidency in relation to the selection of the PM (Tusk is going to be the new PM), but in relation to PiS still having power even after losing the premiership.

Yes, and it is clear that he is trying to use it to benefit PiS, even if he can't keep them in power.

The vote of Confidence in the PiS government was lost 266 against to 190 for with no abstentions . And now, a motion signed by 248 MPs is proposing electing Donald Tusk as Prime Minister. As 248 is more than half of the MPs, it is pretty clear this is going to pass.

Today sitting of the Sejm was interupted by a far-right MP (of the Confederation; yes Boogs, they are far-right) using a fire extinguisher on a menorah, saying it is the symbol of a satanic cult.

The constitutional court has declared Tusk's moves on TVP to be illegal. Of course it must be noted that the majority of the judges were appointed under PiS. But it is an interesting development.
