When was the last time before this by-election that Labour won a 'Mid' seat such as this one? Mid Staffordshire, 1990? There's also Mid Cheshire in 2024. Labour have never won any of the currently existing "Mid" seats other than this one, unless you count Midlothian. As you say they won Mid Staffs (Lichfield & Stone) in 1990, and I think that is the answer to your question. There was a previous Mid Derbyshire which existed from 1885 to 1918, sharing Belper and Duffield with the current version but extending considerably further north, and Labour won that in the 1910 elections after the previous Liberal MP had defected to them. I think that is the only other "Mid" which Labour have won, but note that Mid Bedfordshire was the only one on the UK mainland from 1918 until 1974. Mid-dlesbrough? ... Sorry, coudn't resist

I assumed that if anyone was going to count those they would also count Midlothian.

Middleton and Prestwich: 2014 by-election Liz McInnes! Very good! I do wonder if that constituency still existed (and lest we forget it was about to be revived in the 600-seat review) what would have happened if the same by-election happened. I have a feeling Ukip wouldn't have done as well on the Prestwich side but who knows... Of course to go back further would it have been a straightforward Con gain in 1983 given the 'other' Jim Callaghan only held on by about 1,000 or so in '79. Or would it have been less easy as I assume the estates in Middleton would have grown significantly (and back then would have been the Labour bedrock, unlike 2019...). But I think in any case Labour would have easily regained it in '92 (they of course came incredibly close in Bury South in '92 with you-know-who-Blears...)

From BBC News,Festus is not interested in another constituency election:
"A police and crime commissioner has told the BBC he will not stand as party candidate in the next general election.
Conservative Festus Akinbusoye stood in the Mid Bedfordshire by-election seat in October, but lost to Labour's Alistair Strathern.
He has confirmed he intends to stand for re-election in his current role in May.
Party selection for the role of police and crime commissioner is expected to take place next month.
Speaking on the Andy Collins breakfast show on BBC Three Counties Radio, Mr Akinbusoye said: "I have informed the powers that be, in my party, that I wish to be re-selected as crime commissioner, so I have no interest in standing at a general election.
"There are some really positive things happening in Bedfordshire, since I came into office, with a record number of police officers, the highest we've ever had before.
"We're keeping more of our new officers and also more of our experienced officers - I want to finish what I started and there's a lot more that needs to be done."
