Ten candidates in Weaste & Seedley. Con, Lab, LD, Green, UKIP, BNP, TUSC, 3xInd.
The Green candidate stood for the LDs in 2012 and was LD Councillor for the neighbouring ward 2006-10. The Labour candidate is the son of one of the ward Councillors. One independent is Michael Felse who stood as the English Democrat Mayoral candidate. Another is Alan Valentine, well known to some in this parish!
Only the Conservative candidate lives in the ward, although the third Indy is a couple of streets out. Labour candidate is from Swinton.

Ben Duncan @kemptownben Brighton Green Councillor Matt Follett resigns, triggering by-election in Hanover and Elm Grove ward Nothing to do with the other goings on down there - he and his family are moving from the area, making this the second council he has resigned from for the same reason (the other being Leicester in 2009). The Green majority in that ward is pretty hefty, so if it isn't held it would really set the alarm bells ringing.

Was he a watermelon or a mango? Given the balance of power within the Green group, I could see the selection for the by-election being interesting.

We probably won't have 13 on the fourth of July though. Where do we get this list from? Last week the exact same list as the previous one in this thread was on the UKIP website(I can't find it now), complete with the same typo.(Anyone know where Basilson is?)

By reading threads elsewhere on the forum. Watermelons are green on the outside, red on the inside. Green mangoes are green on the outside, yellow on the inside. It refers to the basic political orientation (and often the past political allegiance) of Green representatives.

Potentially, but as yet the question has never really arisen. Watermelon has been in use as a descriptive term for a few years, but mango is, so far as I'm aware, something that has only come into usage with relation to Brighton, because the conflict within the Greens never had reason to emerge until they actually wielded power somewhere.

We also have limes, i.e. Greens who are focussed primarily on environmental issues (and often would likely not be involved in 'politics' otherwise).

How can only one of ten candidates live in a ward that has 8,000 registered voters!? This happens a lot in met councils, due to the small geographical size of wards. And Weaste and Seedley is not a large ward geographically at all. In a number of cases, the candidates will live in a ward next to it.
