Is there much overlap between this and the former Ormskirk Constituency? I wonder if Robert Kilroy Silk might fancy another punt? Don't give him ideas.

I remember Kilroy Silk assuring the Ormskirk Labour party it was his intention to defend the West Lancs seat right up to the announcement of his selection for Knowsley North...

Is there much overlap between this and the former Ormskirk Constituency? I wonder if Robert Kilroy Silk might fancy another punt? Quite a lot. Parts of Ormskirk that are not in W Lancashire: North Meols, Hesketh, Becconsall, Tarleton and Rufford (the northern tip of W Lancashire district, between Southport and Chorley); Formby, Sefton, Maghull, Lydiate (in fact most of Sefton land area was in it, the exceptions were Southport, Crosby, Litherland and Bootle) and Rainford. Parts of W Lancashire that were not in Ormskirk: Skems, Up Holland and the small parishes of Dalton, Parbold and Wrightington (northeast of Skems, which were traditionally linked to Wigan).

As for other by-elections, the local councillors count is: Lab 25, Con 12, Our West Lancashire 7, Ind 2

In the spirit of other parts of this forum, can I recommend The Hop Vine in Burscough, and The Ship Inn at Lathom, for both ales and food.

Perhaps the most boring seat for a by election to take place in? Probably a good result for the Tories if we manage half as many votes as labour or more, phenomenal result for any third party candidate if they save their deposit It might be quite dull (they can't all be Tiverton or Bradford West) though I always say that every by-election has its own narrative. I'd say Knowsley would be even duller! as indeed much of that seat was in 1986.

Actually that by-election, though the result was never really in doubt and it wasn't very close, did see a spirited Alliance campaign (as mentioned in the person of Rosie Cooper) and a large swing. I remember the coverage of the by-election was interesting because of the grimness of the areas included within it. Knowsley South a few years later was much much duller (and I can remember rushing home from the pub to watch the result)

that's true, I do remember her fighting a spirited campaign, but it was incredibly obvious that Labour would win, even if not quite to the same extent as when Eddie O'Hara was elected. The biggest foregone conclusion for a GAIN in a by-election in my memory was Dudley West in 1994 - I canvassed there partly because the area is noted for brilliant ale! The Tories were never in with the slightest chance of holding the seat. I think the defeated Tory candidate has suffered heavy election defeats at local level since, too.

Sadly, the defeated Conservative candidate at Dudley West-Graham Postles (a fantastic guy and friend) died a while ago.

I think the most interesting question is not whether Labour will hold, it's rather the majority. Because Skem still views itself as part of greater Liverpool culturally, and Starmer's columns in the Sun will not have gone down well.
I wonder if a independent candidate will do well as there's some quite significant local government independent success in both Tory and Labour-inclined areas.

Yes but how many people will notice or care? And how many who do notice or care will go out and vote Labour anyway because that's What They do and What They've Always Done

And Scousers are not always a monolithic Labour block, a significant minority vote for independents.

Nothing more than anecdata, but I suspect in quiet times, Starmer writing in the Sun, Rupa Huq's latest thoughts, tensions with the Labour left, Joe Anderson's messy departure etc. would get a hearing and cause some concern. Right now, it's energy prices, financial turmoil, the Government crashing the economy, mortgages, pension funds, all to fund giveaways to the rich - so I can't see any serious numbers caring about those Labour issues which look trivial in comparison.

comfortably hardly begins to describe it in many constituencies.
