labour vote went up in Hemsworth Sorry, yes; I've corrected that. (But still, it didn't go up by very much.) In both cases the Socialist Labour Party saved their deposit, although narrowly. The SLP is a virtual nonentity now.

This is actually a pretty good result for the Tories in the round. To get 5700 people to vote for this current government, with all it is inflicting on the country right now, on a cold February day in a strong Labour seat is pretty impressive. Sounds like the candidate was good or campaign was well organised. A -10% swing in the current climate is something the Tory party nationally can only dream of! Most of the villages in the seat are solid Tory. They're full of that very rare breed, Scouse Tories, who don't like Liverpool. My sister lives in UpHolland, which has always had a considerable number of "Scouse Tories and Wiganers" as well as an historic Tory vote. That vote has been sliding in recent years, and people my sister works with who were once staunch Tory are now Labour voters. It is an area where the Tory vote has a hope of rebounding in times of an unpopular Labour government - they elected a Tory councillor in 2008.

Up Holland is the sort of place that almost certainly voted Tory back in the days when they won this seat.

the Greens are probably now the home of SLP voters In Hemsworth and Barnsley East? Now that’s a plausible boundary change!

Most of the villages in the seat are solid Tory. They're full of that very rare breed, Scouse Tories, who don't like Liverpool. By contrast, Skelmersdale is almost as rock-solidly Labour as most of Knowsley. Ormskirk is the only part of this constituency that can be considered marginal. While you missed out Burscough (which is marginal), the assessment is pretty solid - I live pretty close by in Preston! I have other connections to Skem, but not comfortable with disclosing those on the forum.

Thing is, I'd argue Upholland is in the transition zone between Lancs/Merseyside/GM anyway, like e.g. Warrington. So a higher Tory base makes a lot of sense. Your insights are interesting though, I wouldn't have expected them to quite elect a Tory - I'm assuming the influx of Scouse commuters further out is pushing the town redder.

Skem is heavily Labour, almost all of the villages are heavily Tory, Ormskirk which used to be on the Tory side of marginal is now on the Labour side of just-about-marginal.

Back then Labour had recently abandoned Clause IV of it's constitution and this would not have gone down well with some people in places like Hemsworth. My Grandad abandoned Labour in the mid 90's in favour of the SNP over this policy

It's not to do with the reputation of the town, it's more personal info and you have to be careful what to publish on any form of social media.

I like to get away from the SE myself when possible. Work commitments are making trips to country pubs very infrequent at the moment, let alone holidays
