I can't comment on her attractiveness. But I do recall a Labour leaflet headlined "Belinda is a moron", which wouldn't seem to have been successful

On the contrary, it shows the incompetence of the party, the agent and the candidate. The law is the law and it is what it is and it is a well known fact. Resign first and submit candidature afterwards when not in a state of disqualification. What on earth could be simpler? It’s obviously the agent’s fault for not checking, but it is perfectly reasonable to have assumed that so long as she was not a council employee when the election took place there wasn’t a problem. Also there was probably a notice period she was required to give, which might well have been a problem at a by-election which was called quickly. A work colleague of mine resigned to stand for council, which I thought was brave. No pay and no certainty of victory, or indeed another job, since you can’t live on councillor allowances. Actually, it is possible for a single person to live on the councillor allowance for many of the larger single-tier councils (Birmingham and Coventry are in that category).

Coventry's allowance is a bit more than £15,000 these days, which is high enough that I could live off it, whilst Birmingham's allowance is a bit higher. But it does vary a lot with the size of the authority, and how easy it is to live off also depends on the cost of living in the council area (which often bears no relation to the level of councillor allowances).

When I was a councillor in Sheffield from 1999 to 2010 I was on £8K to £11K. That and the number of hours certainly qualified it enough to require signing off the Dole as being in full time work.

In Sheffield we had an unwritten rule that the Executive were *banned* from being on administrative boards.

I don't think its the generosity of the remuneration is the issue, after all my JSA was significantly reduced when I was signing on and a councillor as the largess of £3 1/2k put me above what the Government told the DWP to tell folks what they needed to survive.
Not to diminish the leap of faith your colleague took however.

About £6k in Trafford. Over the border in Manchester, same size wards and same elections in thirds, £16k.

Always an achievement to get fewer votes than nominations Its currently only two signatures needed, so that really would be an achievement!
